Hey guys new to the forum. i have a sony blu ray bdp-bx1 just purchased a pioneer vsx-819h receiver. going through the menu screen on the blu ray after setting all audio to come out hdmi it still comes out through optical out i spent an hour with tech services at sony and they could not help the hdmi is brand new out of the box. my tv is an older unit that is not hdmi equipped.. the receiver is i guess i am wondering if you cannot set up the video selection to hdmi for the blu ray does the audio automatically shut of and revert to coax or optical? i guess if the blu ray does not recognize a tv it will not let you set to hdmi even though i am plugged into an hdmi receiver if the other end is not connected maybe the blu ray know this and will not turn on the audio i would like to experience true hd and dts hd is this going to be possible with my set up? I've also read that it is hard to tell the difference on blu ray between dts and dts -hd because there is more room on the disc and the compression is less. i know from my own experiences far the blu ray dts is outstanding just wondering how much i am missing from dits hd

Welcome to the forum!

As far as I can tell, the Sony will output audio from both the HDMI OUT jack and the DIGITAL OUT jacks (optical/coax) at the same time. You can, however, set which jack has priority, and that will determine the quality of the audio being output from each jack. So, be sure to set HDMI as the priority. Because the blu-ray player will output audio from both sets of outputs (actually, from those and the analog outputs), the issue might be in how you have the new receiver set up. Here are some things to check, along with the appropriate page number in the owner's manual:
  1. Make sure that the receiver is set up to process the audio over HMDI (page 39)
  2. Set the input signal for the input source that you're using for the blu-ray player on the receiver (e.g. "BD/DVD") to HDMI (page 40)
Please let us know if that solves your problem or if it still doesn't work. Thanks.

How are you setting the ouput of the Bluray player via HDMI. Bitstream or PCM, which will limit the sound as the player may not decode some of the new audio formats (My Sony 350 won't decode DTS-MA at all via PCM) (it will send the "core" DTS-HD format which is at 1.5 Mbps. So I have to send it everything as Bitstream and let my Denon 3808 do all the decoding.
