Cannot hear good surround

Now I have placed the surrounds 6 ft from floor and when I try to use the tone function of the HTS, i just simply cant make all speakers sound at the same level. I am worried about the direct radiating surrounds since they reproduce a hollowness in their sound. I can manage the strength through the HTS setup between -6db to + 6db. Therefore for the surrounds I increased the signal to the surround to +2db (keeping at 0 db for the center and fronts) and since I was finding the LFE too much so I also reduced the SUB to -1 db.

I have tried +6db setting for my surrounds but they still give a hollow sound. Is it because of my room height (11.25ft, see my earlier posts for details) or the surrounds are simply meant to be like that, soft and suttle.

Try listening with the receiver set to "5-ch stereo" or whatever the units equivilent to that is, & see if the surrounds are producing good sound. If you try to listen to a stereo production in a 5.1/DD format you won't get much if anything from the surrounds. Be aware that even when watching a movie in 5.1/DD that there isn't going to be a constant flow of sound from the surrounds, only when the soundtrack of the movie dictates.

I'm assuming,since I didn't read your other post, that you have the proper interconnects (dig coax,toslink) for the DVD player to the receiver.

Have you used a set up DVD to level match all your speakers with a sound pressure level meter? You have to use a meter; cannot do it by ear.

You may not be liking the direct firing nature of your surround speakers. Most of the time you will get soft effect sounds. Some DVDs will have stronger surround sounds from time to time.
But, it is important to level match all speakers.

If the aforementioned remedies fail try the movie "finding nemo" if you have it and listen to the THX intro. This uses your surrounds extensively.
