Thanks for your answer. I'm not really sure about the scaler chips, maybe there's some info I can look up on them sometime.

The Faroudja DCDi chip isn't bad at all, that's what the original Oppo 971 player uses, and it was one of the highest rated players in its day. Not saying the newer faroudja chips aren't better, but it's still pretty good. It's easy enough to turn the receivers scaling feature on and off so an A/B comparison can be done to see which scales better, the receiver, or the tv.

How about Onkyo Video upconversion quality

I guess this thread is probably closing soon - but on the subject of Onkyo/Denon: should the upconversion quality be a factor in the comparison of the 2308 & 605/705?
The cnet review describes bad or absent pulldown processing on the onkyo - i haven't read about the performance of the denon when doing the upconversion.
Any comments on the quality of the 1080p upconversion of the 2308?

From what I understand the Onkyo up-conversion has been criticized by some reviewers because many of their systems will only up-convert to 720p; I believe the 605/705s are in that category. On the other hand the Denon 2308 up-converts to 1020p, so it should yield a very satisfactory quality. A little after receiving my Onkyo receiver I emailed Onkyo and asked them were there any upgrades planned (firmware, etc.) to increase the upcoversion to 1080p, their reply made me feel like I was getting the brush off. It went something like; "There are no plans or considerations being made to upgrade, etc., etc., etc." In other words a resounding NO with no indication behind it that they will ever consider an upgrade or increase. So I took my Onkyo back and traded it for a Denon, which had everything the Onkyo had plus 1020p up-coversion. That is NOT, in any way, to say that the Onkyo is a bad receiver, it's an excellent receiver. From what I've read several people here think up-conversion is far over-rated.

The TX-SR805 and down have no scaling at all. They deinterlace to 480p only. The TX-SR875 has the Reon HQV scaler, which is supposedly top of the line at the moment and scales up to 1080p.

Dave, thank you for clearing up the Denon Faroudja scalers, I would certainly like to think that a higher model would sport a higher end scaler.:)
