can someone help?

I am trying to hook up a new blue ray but we are electronically retared.

This is what I have:
cable DVR
Blue ray- (new)
stereo receiver-(new)
tv- (fairly new but does not have a HDMI connection)
surround speakers

At the time we now have the cable DVR directly hooked to the TV and for some reason all of our HD channels are running horizontally-can't see them. Can anyone help?
