Can I use eggshell type foam for diy acoustic panels?

Fellow forumite tcarcio just sent me some Polk speakers, included in the awesome packing job was some squishy eggshell type foam. Can I buy some of that generic art at a decorator store and fill the back/inside of it with that stuff and use it for acoustic panels? Or won't that work?

I know it will absorb sound, I'm not sure about diffusion.

It would probably have an affect on high frequencies >1000 hz. However reduction in that area isn't usually needed unless you have slap echoing, which is usually eliminated by furniture and decor.

You can read and learn all about treatments and why you might need them here: http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8119
I'm not sure what my echo is called (cause I'm an idiot ) but it sounds like a stairwell in my living room. Its a very square room on three sides, with a 2 story ceiling. We have two leather couches, a leather chair, and carpet, and some kind of decorative window treatment.

Based on the link above, it sounds like I have a slap echo. Will the foam I described work? How much wall will I need to cover? Where do I put it?

I've used it with excellent results in my room. It helped cure what I would call "edginess" to my sound (higher frequencies). I'm using it purely for its absorbtive qualities.

It's fairly inexpensive, but you may need to experiment. I found a large source of brigtness was coming from reflections off of my brick fireplace. I covered it with a double panel of the foam (I built). It made a noticeable difference.
