Hi,

I'm a newbie here. Can I use a 4 ohm car amplifier to power up my home speakers? I'm thinking of using a Focal 2 channel amp to power my monitor audio rear speakers. Thanks

What would you use for a power supply? If the amp is 4-ohm capable then you're good to go with 4ohm speakers or higher impedance....2 ohm speakers might be an issue, tho.

That is a very bad idea. The amp will output about 35 watts at most to your speakers and be voltage limited.

Car amps have oscillators in them so the 12 volts can be stepped up to give enough voltage to the power transistors to give more then a meager few watts of power.

So you are going to take your 120 volt AC at the plug turn it into 12 volts DC, and then have the car amp power supply up the voltage to 40 volts AC or so and then rectify it to DC. That is a mess and asking for trouble.

It is always a bad plan to use car audio devices for home audio.

You can get a pretty darn good 2 channel amp meant for home audio use from Parts Express or Monoprice for well under $100. Sell the car amp and get something that works without issues.

I like Ken's suggestion more than buying a $190 power supply. I suppose if money were tight and I already had the stuff....maybe but I leave my auto audio in the auto....

Rear speakers don't need much power anyways. If you have them connected now to receiver - just leave them be as is.
Sell the car amp - you don't want or need it to be used in home audio.
