yea, i know its worth it, if you need everything it comes with, but i really cant use anything besides that particular cable...

im all set up and ready to go, all i need is the cable to hook up to my receiver, i have everything hooked up very nicely with no wires being exposed ,at all, all throughout out my house... now the last thing i am unsure about is the "mini" part... im not sure if its mini toslink (witch i think it is) or mini phono...

but when i think about it, it seems to be 2 in one (on the airport express) because that out put for the airtunes, will take either of the 2 wires that comes in set sold by apple, one is analog, one is digital... so it must be 2 in 1, is that it, or am i very mistaken?
Yes, it is two in one. The audio out port on the Airport Express does double duty (analog and digital) depending on which cable you connect to it. As for your needs, if you do not need the extension cord for power, then yes, this kit would not be very well priced for you.

I have two ideas...

1. Search on various sites (craigslist, ebay, amazon, monoprice, etc.) for either this kit at a reduced price, or for just the cable you need.

or

2. Buy the kit, and then try to sell the pieces you do not need online.

yea i found the wire i need ( i believe ) thanks to someone posting it for me, another thing about the apple kit is that i highly doubt the wires are long enough, they always short change you with very short useless wires. i bought this 12 footer for $2.98, compared to apples $40!

while i was there i also bought this for $6.31 compared to apples for $29.99
but i hope it works... it might not! but worth a $6 try :)

all i really need is the mini-to-optical digital Toslink audio cable (about a 10 footer)

there must be a way around buying this from apple for $40. i know of a site that sells cables pretty cheap, im just not sure what to look for because the non toslink side is a bit tricky for me, i dont want to buy the wrong thing, i want to get it right off the bat...

and if theres not a wire like this for sale out side of apple, are there any type of converters i can use?

my goal is to set up airtunes, using airport express, and my onkyo receiver 605 i think...

thanks in advance!
You mean, like this?

If you don't have an optical input available on your receiver, you could get one of these:

The jack on an Airport Express works with 3.5mm analog or TosLink, which connects to any optical input with the first adapter I linked to.
