all i really need is the mini-to-optical digital Toslink audio cable (about a 10 footer)

there must be a way around buying this from apple for $40. i know of a site that sells cables pretty cheap, im just not sure what to look for because the non toslink side is a bit tricky for me, i dont want to buy the wrong thing, i want to get it right off the bat...

and if theres not a wire like this for sale out side of apple, are there any type of converters i can use?

my goal is to set up airtunes, using airport express, and my onkyo receiver 605 i think...

thanks in advance!

do you think those are better than the optical cable? or did you link me to that wire because they dont have what i want?

Frankly, I don't see any electrical to optical conversion going on in either of these cables.

Neither of those will convert a coaxial (electrical) digital signal to an optical (light)Toslink signal. This requires more than a passive wire with different connections on each end. It's two distinctly different formats.

What you've seen so far will take an analog stereo signal from a 1/8" mini-jackand convert it to a right/left analog signal with RCA outputs, assuming the input is analog to begin with. Is this what you want? Are you sure you're dealing with a digital signal, not an analog one?

If you really want to go froma n electrical digital signal to a toslink digital signal, you would need something like this, perhaps with an additional adapter for the RCA.

But, I could always be wrong...

on the apple site i posted above , in the description of the product they are selling it says, "a Monster mini-to-optical digital Toslink audio cable" , when i read that i understand this to be a monster cable with one side optical to fit into my receiver and the other to be a regular metal plug that would fit into my airport express.

am i wrong about this assumption?

I read the same thing but I have no idea what they are talking about and I read and re-read it. Are there other parts that are not shown?

Are you sure the output of your device is a digital output?

If that thing does, in fact, convert digital to analog, I doubt you'll find it any cheaper. It ain't just a wire.

the airport express, is a router that can stream my music from my laptop to my receiver wirelessly, my onkyo receiver has the optical port, but the airport express it has what looks to be a regular metal pin output, like were you plug you ipods earphones into... i posted a link to to a picture of the wire i want to buy above.

That's a horse of a different color.

the wire i am looking to buy is pictured in the bottom right hand corner, it is a a Monster mini-to-optical digital Toslink audio cable, is there no alternative to this? if i want this cable, no one besides apple sells it?
That's more than just a simple cable. You need SEVERAL of those items, not just one simple cable. Go for it. I doubt you'll find THEM cheaper.

no its definitely one cable, im sure of it, here is another look http://images.csnw.com/lrg/serv-922-6540.jpg

that is the only wire i need for everything to work, im positive... the apple site sells the kit that the wire i want is included in, but i dont need the other 2 wires. i either want to purchase the very same wire alone, or a after market version....

one of the wires they include is a power cord extension for the airport express ( a wireless router) i dont need this

the other wire is a simple analog way to connect

the last is the wire i need, so that i can connect digitally...

in this picture you will see the airport express and 3 wires connected to it, the ONLY 3 that can be connected, the first on the left is a ethernet cable (for internet) the second is usb (for wireless printing) and the last on the right is what i need to hook up my system.

Hey Sam,

I also have an airport express, and will be hooking it to my new receiver as soon as my speakers are delivered (I am new to audio/ht). As for the stereo connection kit that Apple sells, I do not know if you can find these cables individually anywhere else (of course I haven't looked either).

Personally, I opted to buy this connection kit because I needed the same cable that you do, but it also provides the extension cable to the Airport Express that is very handy. This allows me to have my airport express on a shelf in my entertainment center instead of awkwardly plugged directly into my surge protector. Given the large size of the Airport Express, this would block at least one, of not two power outlets on my surge that I cannot spare. So for me, the extender cable in this kit is essential. If you have a need for the extension cable also, then I doubt you will find a better deal for all of these items.

Let me know if you have any other questions pertaining to the stereo kit or airport express.

Later~

hey, i think this is it! will the none optical side fit the airport express? im not sure what size i need.. how should i find out?...
Both sides are optical. One is the regular size that we're all used to. The other end is a mini optical, not to be confused with mini stereo. I looked at the apple web site and looked at your product. I can't tell which one it needs.

Analog/optical audio jack
That sounds like an oxymoron to me.....

yea, i know its worth it, if you need everything it comes with, but i really cant use anything besides that particular cable...

im all set up and ready to go, all i need is the cable to hook up to my receiver, i have everything hooked up very nicely with no wires being exposed ,at all, all throughout out my house... now the last thing i am unsure about is the "mini" part... im not sure if its mini toslink (witch i think it is) or mini phono...

but when i think about it, it seems to be 2 in one (on the airport express) because that out put for the airtunes, will take either of the 2 wires that comes in set sold by apple, one is analog, one is digital... so it must be 2 in 1, is that it, or am i very mistaken?

Sorry. Went of the item pictured in the link rather than reading that you were after one of the other cables in the set.

No, my suggestion would be fine for stereo but would not give you surround. Others have already pointed to alternate sources for the cable you do want at this point, so I'll avoid repitition.

OK, now I see what it is.
It doesn't convert optical to a mini jack.
It's 'stays optical' and just converts to a smaller style optical jack.

Mark is right; there's no way to convert the two different technologies within one cable.

EDIT:I see this has been answered. I didn't refresh my page before posting.

You can generally use a stereo-y cable to interface most devices with a receiver.

I looked it up

it has a 3.5-mm audio minijack for analog or optical digital sound5

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2 will work just fine as others have linked.
