A friend of mine copied Pink Floyd DSOTM a while back...the 30th aniversary issue...it is the SACD hybrid disc....my question is, if he copied it disc to disc, did the SACD part copy?

Try this on for size

I'm a serious floyd fan, but I must say that the DSOTM SACD is a most own item for anyone. But another great SACD I've come across thus far is Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture released by TELARC. It was mastered from actual DSD recordings so it gives IMO a truer picture of what SACD's have to offer. It also comes with a warning about the cannons do to thier extremely high recording level...and with good reason. It really does sound like your sitting in the middle of battlefield with cannon balls flying by your listening postion...and I'm pretty sure they'll stress anyone's system to the max...

I'm not certain but you may be able to copy an older, single-layer SACD.

But then the RIAA will send ninjas to your house while you sleep to cut-off your testicles and fill you iPod with songs by Wolf Eyes and Wumpscut.

how do i determine if the SACD part copied? I guess my question is, does the 578a give some kind of signal that a SACD is being played? It appears to be playing music in 5 channels....

I most highly DO NOT RECOMMEND Telarc's 1812 overture. The entire piece is deliberately recorded at far below normal levels until the end. This causes most listeners to turn up their volume more than they normally would. The result being, that when the "digital cannons" go off, so do their speakers. This disk can cause serious speaker damage. The way to play the disk is to go to the end first, adjust your system volume to the digital cannon blasts. Then go back and play the disk. Even the best speakers can be damaged by this disk, be careful.

That's why the disc comes with a warning! Just because something could destroy thousands of dollars worth of equipment doesn't mean it's not worth while, it just means you need to be careful, if one fails to heed the warning then it's their own fault...kind of like putting a Styrofoam cup of hot coffee between your legs while driving.

How would you copy a SACD layer? (1.) No computer drive can read SACD of which I am aware. (2.) No blank SACD discs or CD writers exist.

The only way to copy the SACD part is to physically record the analog outputs back into a computer, then authoring a DVD-A format and buring a DVD-A. I think a program was just recently released(this week) that can author DVD-A discs for home use.

As for playing in all 5 channels, you probably have some sort of DSP matrix surround simulation effect enabled in your hardware.

How many people take that Telarc warning seriously? Especially those people with expensive speakers??? Most probably feel that their system can handle anything. I am sure more than a few have sadly found out the hard way that that is not the case. I am sure that quite a few people have also taken the Telarc warning with a grain of salt figuring that it is advertising hipe.

I feel that it was wrong of Telarc to deliberately record the entire overture at far below normal recording levels and then blasting the cannons to the very max. It is just asking for trouble.

it can be copied but you are not hearing it as a SACD

same as when i play the SACD in my computer... btw I have the Pink Floyd DSOTM hybrid
and it really sounds awsome

Telarc had to record it below average. If they didn't there would not be enough dynamic range for the cannons

Right... then you are not recording the SACD layer at all. You are hearing the reb book(regular CD) layer.

Thanks for the explanations. Anyways, the Pioneer 578a says what kind of disc is in the player right on the display.
