BUT:
Would it be possible to get a four-way speaker (eg: Kef Reference 201) and then purchase/modify four amplifiers that only operate over the range that the speaker elements respond to?

(+/- 10%)
eg: 55Hz - 400Hz for the bass
401Hz - 2.7KHz for the mid
2.71Khz - 15Khz for the hf
15.1Khz - 55KHz for the vhf

if this can be done, would that remove the need for the crossovers altogether?

Hawke is right, it is called biamping with an active cross-over. Biamping beyond a sub and mains just gets complicated and not worth it for the cost involved and effort to set it up correctly. Even set up correctly, there is little proof that really sounds better anyway. Invest in better speakers and/or amp and be done with it.
