calibrating rear channel gain

my rear speakers are certainly not as loud as the surrounds or fronts, they supposedly have a sensitivity of only 1db less though. what factors play into how many DB of gain i need to give them so that i can actually hear them over the louder speakers without making them overly louder.

Honestly tones and a meter are the only sure way to tell.

Then notch them up until they sound right to you.

It sounds like you already knew that the responses were going to be "get an SPL meter" and the reason for that is because it IS the answer.
