So I just got an HD DVR from Time Warner installed and everything seemed to work fine for awhile, but now I'm getting audio drops at random intervals.

Could it be the HDMI cord or something else? I've never had this happen before so I'm a little confused as to why it has started now

It's your speakers. Darn unreliable Phil 3s. I'm feeling generous, though, and would be willing to take those off your hands and get you a pair of the stunning Infinity P363s.

:D

Seriously, though - how long of an HDMI cable? And, what were you using before (a different cable box)?

Haha yes must be the speakers. I'll probably take you up on that.....in about 10 years when I'm ready for a new pair :D

Hmm 6 feet I think, vizio, only about a year old. I wasn't using a cable box, straight cable so it's unclear whether a different box would work.

I get the same thing with direct tv- was wondering if it was my old Yamaha. Only lasts about a second, but it's a pain in the butt all the same. I'm connected via optical though. So annoying!

Is the audio switching from 5.1 to stereo and then back? For example, do you notice it when a show goes to a commercial?

It is, I don't know about you but it always seems to happen just as the characters of whatever I'm watching say something important. I'm forced to rewind and watch everything again. All in all I watch every tv episode like 6 times before I catch all the dialogue

It does do that too, but this is during episodes and as far as I can tell by the little screen it's just losing audio signal and finding it again. I'll admit I was only half paying attention, because the other half was throwing a temper tantrum and rewinding.

I'll check again and report back.

Well I watched closely this time and when it goes from the show to a commercial the "mode" goes blank and the hdmi light blinks like it's trying to figure out what signal it's getting. Now when it loses audio during the show it does the same thing. The "mode" goes blank and the HDMI light blinks like it's trying to figure out what signal it's getting.

Could this be the box's fault, the receiver's, or the HDMI?

Make sure all your connections are intact and clean and if they are, swap out the cable and see if the issue persists.

I had this issue with an HK receiver and it turned out to be the "auto mode" as some have suggested. Your processor is switching at commercials ... but like yours my receiver used to do it during broadcasts as well. It is likley not the box.

The connections are fine, I was just trying to find out if it could be the box or the receiver. Swapping out the cable is a last resort since it involves moving a 300+lb entertainment stand.....by myself

I can do it, but I'd obviously rather not :D

Swapped out cables, and voila. No audio. At all. Whatsoever. Cable works fine, has to be box. Doing a hard reset on the box and seeing if that helps. If not then I have to contact time warner which should be a regular ball of joy and happiness.

As mentioned, check to see if your receiver is automatically choosing the audio mode. If it is, have it not do that and see if the issue goes away.

I'll check that, but now heres the new wrinkly in my dress.

Old cable outputs audio, although sketchy audio.

Brand new audio cable works fine with blu-ray player, but audio-wise does not function with the cable box.

Plugged old audio cable back in and is working without issue for the longest period since the problem started.

confused to say the least.

Well, now that you've shown that you're willing to use a different cable, it feels threatened. :D

It should. I was ready to take a hammer to the thing :D

So now the old cable works, knock on wood, but now I want to know why the brand new cable doesn't.

But now I'm paranoid and afraid to touch anything.

If it happens again, call TWC. Is it an Atlanta Scientific box? Have you checked out the SD channels to see if it is confined to HD only? I had a similar problem a couple years ago, as you described it. Mine was only problematic on HD and worked fine on SD. I called TWC and they pushed out a firmware update to me while I was on the call. No problems since.

I haven't tried SD channels. I may do it after sleep, but right now it's working. Who knows how long it'll last, but I'm guessing a call to time warner is in my future.
