Buying used speakers

Hello all,

Let me start by saying i'm definitely a newbie when it comes to anything involving audio which is why I'm here. I'm nearing the end of finishing my basement which will be a dedicated theater room. I've done a bit of research on entry level audio systems for my room and I see some people recommend buying used. The potential to get a great deal on great speakers is very intriguing.

I'm curious as to other's thought process on buying used speakers for a home theater. Geared more in the direction of how old is too old? Would you buy from a private seller with little to no experience? What concerns initially pop in your head?

Let me give you my specific situation. I have access to buying a pair of Klipsch RF-62 ii reference series floor speakers for $300. They were originally purchased in 2007, lightly used then packaged away and have not been used at all in 5 years. its a private sale with an individual who knows the basics and history of the speakers. She says they have been wrapped and packaged in her basement since 2012. Is this an alarming background that I should steer clear of or does it sound like a pretty decent deal? Especially with the factor that she probably won't be able to demo them for me before I try them out myself.

Have you heard that speaker? Not sure I'd by used Klipsch, except the Heritage line or Palladium line , just my thoughts. There typically is no problem buy used as long as you like them, the money is right and you can confirm they function as they should . I've got Speakers that are 30 years old and still Sound as good when purchased.

My main concern was the age. After further research I discovered that they aren't the RF-62 ii like she listed but the earlier model of RF-62. I don't know how much difference that makes in sound. I heard the RF-62 ii but not the other model. I think I'm going to pull the trigger and give it a shot. They look like they are in great condition and the price seems right. I just didn't know if there was a lifespan for speakers. I'm sure its dependent upon multiple factors but with all the reviews and forums I've read about these specific ones, I'm ok with giving it a shot. Thanks for your input!!

I'd highly recommend listening to them first. I'm not familiar with all their models, but they can vary greatly in sq from what I've read.

The ii series has a reworked crossover that is supposed to have reduced some problems with harshness, so you might consider that when listening to them.
I have the RF82ii's for my HT and am generally happy with them, but have not heard the earlier series (only read reviews).
