Buying new 5.1 surround sound speakers

I'm looking at spending less that $2k. The room they're going in is about 15x17 (the house plan is here: http://tinyurl.com/dv7pf if you'd like to see the room). I have a Harmon Kardon AVR 225 receiver, Phillips progressive scan DVD player, and a Sony 300-disc CD player. The guy at Hifi Buys recommended these:

http://tinyurl.com/8jqbr

He said either bookshelf or in-wall speakers for the surround sound (he was very vague, and not very helpful). I've read good things about Axiom, Paradigm, B&W, and others. But I've also read that it would be better to buy bookshelf speakers all the way around for what I'm looking to spend. What do you all think. Can you give me specific speakers instead of just brands? And should I buy a sub and bookshelf speakers or floor standing speakers in my price range?

Thanks.

Axiom setup

The Axiom M22ti fronts, VP100 center, and QS8 surrounds should work well in your setup. They will run about $1050 from the Outlet at Axiom Audio. Add about $500 to upgrade to the M60 floorstanders and VP150 center.

With the bookshelf system, you have plenty left for a good 12" sub from SVS or HSU. You sould be able to get the SVS PB-12Plus for under $1k. If you go for the floorstanders, you should be able to afford the SVS PB10-ISD.

Would you recommend that system above this one:

I went to a local store at lunch and the guy there recommended the Polk speakers. I read an article on this site about the company as well; they are impressive.

Thanks a lot for the help.

I have to be honest, and say I have never heard the Axiom. On the other hand, I would certainly choose the Polk system. I have several reasons.

1) I know for a fact I like their sound.
2) All drivers are exactly the same in each speaker.
3) All speakers are 8ohm.
4) The mains and center have the same sensitivity. 90dB
5) The surrounds are only 1dB off @ 89dB.
6) It just looks like a better system on paper to me.

I almost forgot, you would be getting the SVS sub. Too many reasons why it's better than the Axiom sub.;)

I think the Axiom system would sound good, but with some alterations.

-VP150 Center. I think the VP100 would be too small to match the M60s.
-SVS or Hsu Sub. $650 should get you more than a -3dB point of 28Hz. That's pathetic, IMO.

My house will be finished in about 3 weeks (at least I hope so; I'm getting married in 4 weeks :) ). Anyway, I contacted the guys at SVS, and they told me that the PB12-NSD/v has been discontinued and it and the old PB12-NSD have been replaced with a new PB12-NSD.

I'm going with the Polk RTi8 for the front, RTi6 for the surround, and CSi5 for the center. Would the new PB12-NSD be a good fit for my room and these speakers? Is there another SVS sub you'd recommend?

Thanks again for the help.

SVS sub

The new 12" SVS sub should work great in your room.
I am saving for the new SB12-Plus model due to my space and WAF requirements.
