Sony is notorious for using cheap thermal paste on the chips, mine use to run as high as yours I took it apart an found cheap white thermal paste, changed it to Arctic Sliver 5 and now the fan stays at level 1.
I found the same crappy paste when I took my first one apart, and tried to replace it to get the old one working while I had it apart, and I had no idea just the paste could make it run that hot? Crazy.

I was thinking about getting an all-in-one remote, but they cost some monies if I want a nice one.

Once you got YLOD the thermal paste change won't work , you would need to heat up the board area around the chips to melt the solder with a heat gun to get them to sit right again and thats a pain. The one she broke was a $150 at the time this is why she in no longer allowed in the man cave without supervision.

I think it's out jealousy because our stuff is cool.
My women has plenty of gems and gold to keep her happy. I think jewelry is a way to make a gift and an investment at the same time. :D

I've considered getting a stand-alone player because the fan on my PS 3 drives me nuts sometimes. The problem is that I can't find a player for a decent price (around $200) that works as well as the PS 3. I don't want to wait a minute or so for a player to load and play a disc. The PS 3 is nice and fast.

"What choo talkin bout Willis?" I picked up a Panasonic BD60 for $109 and it works easily as well as the PS3. Currently $127 on Amazon. Load times are surprisingly good, though I haven't tried a lot of discs yet. The Oppo is actually faster than the PS3.

The reality is, NO, you don't need another player just for BD. I did go with another player because my receiver is older and doesn't have HDMI so I wanted the analog out capabilities. Plus, the upscaling of the Oppo is also better than the PS3 (not that the PS3 isn't good at it). I have 2 PS3s and 2 BD players, and I will probably continue watching movies on the BD players vs the PS3 after having my 60G die on me.

So far I could on find 3 things that might be problems for the PS3
1) Fan noise on some units.
2)Power consumption for both fat and slim is still more than a stand-alone BRP
3)Now this is for some people, wife usability

There are very few or if any stand-alone BRP's in any price range that can compete with the PS3.

Fan noise is considerably reduced on the slim, but it isn't GONE. Realistically, as someone else mentioned, if you set it to auto login and auto launch and have the BD remote, there is basically no difference between the PS3 and a stand alone player useability wise.

This is true but unfortunately the average consumer may not know this, now my reasons for wanting a stand-alone is simple the wife broke a remote I don't want to see what she would do to my PS3.

The only things I tried were removing the entire board, and then putting new paste on the sinks, then that didn't work so I tried to heat the entire board and reflash it, that didn't work either. Someone else said that one of the capacitors or something in the power supply could be faulty, so I bought a new power supply, put it in and... still YLOD. So I just gave up after dissasembling it 3 or 4 times, and losing about 25% of the screws in the process. So I gave up and gave it to Sony for $150 and they sent me a new one, so I won't complain about that part, but if it happens again, I'll probably try to fix it again or get a new PS3. Although I don't think the new ones are backwards capable and I play a lot of Ps2 and Ps1 games as well if I'm feeling nostalgic.

The new PS3's are not backward capable that is one reason for the new low prices for the PS3. Like I said trying to fix YLOD is a pain so sometimes it better to just pay Sony to fix it or buy a new one.

Yeah, if you're out of waranty you might as well open it up and try like I did. They're going to replace it for a new one if you break it enough in the process.:D

It seems hard to believe but I really do find my PS3 slim doing visibly better with DVD since the last two FW updates (most likely since 3.1). I read the update notes and there is no mentioning of any changes to anything that relates to upscaling. To me, the PS3 is now one of the top performer in upscaling. The picture is a little touch softer than my XDE-500 but it is also slightly yet visibly more noise free with all the noise reduction features turned off.

Anyway, most of the time I don't use it to play DVD because I have other capable players for that purpose, but it is something to keep in mind for those who do, if and when they decide to get a stand alone player.

Thanks John, I'll have to take a look at the BD60. But the Oppo's $500!!! That's a bit more than I'm looking to spend.
