Do I bother buying a Blu-Ray player if I have a PS3 - is there any reason to? Quality?

I have a PS3 as well and I am looking to buy a Blu-ray player not because the PS3 isn't a great Blu-ray player it's because the wife can't work it. If it wasn't for that fact I would just keep on using the PS3.

PS3 power consumption is quite high. I have a kill-a-watt meter that I used to measure about 160 watts draw when watching simple dvd's. My standalone blu-ray player draws less than 30 watts at all times during operation.

My wife is HORRIBLE when it comes to anything new.
I set my PS3 to auto log in to my user name and I set the system to auto start when a disc is installed. All she has to do is turn the PS3 on, let it start and insert the disc. I did add the PS3 remote so all the controls are familiar and she is able to play discs without a fuss. In this mode, the unit operates like a stand alone player.;)

You can change things for when you want to play a game or something as you understand the system but this is an easy fix for the less than Tech savvy among us.

Hope it helps.

just give up. The wife can't work anything. My wife can't even use my universal remote. She's not stupid either. She's just not a technical person.

I sold my PS3 and am now using an Xbox 360 for games and a standalone player.

I taught my girlfriend how to use my Harmony One, and she can switch between components fairly well, but she seems to at least be able to play a movie when she wants, whether it be with the PS3 or on the PC. Both my bedroom and living room systems are set up pretty much identically so that makes it easier for her too.

I never liked the Sony remote control for the PS3. It just sucked so horribly that I actually considered a dedicated BD player. I've since replaced the crappy Sony remote with the Harmony PS3 adapter for my Harmony 880 and it's fantastic. The only thing it won't do (so far) is turn off the PS3 via macro when switching back to satellite TV. It will turn it off manually though. The problem is the extra confirmation step that Sony puts you through.

I wish the PS3 remote had a backlight. I have to use the light from my Harmony to use the PS3 remote haha.

No, not really.... It actually was the other way around for me as I had two stand alone players already when I bought the slim PS3. Since then (September) I have used one of my stand alone players once only. I prefer the PS3 mainly for its ability to stream from my desktop PC.

I know what you mean my wife can't work any of my gear. That's why she has been banned from the man cave. To the OP just keep using your PS3 unless you have a spouse who can't work it or if you are concerned about power consumption

I would consider playing blu rays on a normal stand alone player when you start to get irritated hearing that faint or loud fan on the ps3 if you have the volume low, which I'm starting to get irritated by. As for my wife, she is pretty competent using all our equipment. 4 different remotes are required just to start the projector, change the source on the receiver, change the channel on the cable box, or operate the PS3 so she can play her beloved Assassin's Creed. That's why I like my wife  and it only took me about an hour to explain and she never asked me about it again.:)

Now you peaked my interest,my PS3's fan stays at level 1 no matter what I am using it for, So I don't hear mine even when the TV is muted. Is your fan loud or quiet, also congrats on the wife being able to use your gear maybe she could teach classes to other wives who can't, we can call it A/V 101:D

Yeah, she can use it well. SHE EVEN KNOWS WHAT ALL THE BUTTONS ON THE REMOTE MEAN. I also taught her how to change brake pads on her car, and when the front ones went out she did it herself. amazing, I know....

My Ps3 is the launch model, and I've just got a brand new one. The old one had the yellow light issue, and I took it apart and tried to fix it but it was still broken, so I sent it to the factory, paid $150, waited two weeks and they sent me an un-opened launch Ps3. HOORAY! brand new for only $150, different serial number too, so it was definitly different. My fan seems to jump up several levels during anything. It sits on its own private shelf that has about a foot of space above it, and 2 feet to either side and the shelf is 4 feet deep, so it's got plenty of air space, but still the fan goes up WAY HIGH sometimes. Haven't found a way to fix it, but It may just be getting too hot somehow.

Sony is notorious for using cheap thermal paste on the chips, mine use to run as high as yours I took it apart an found cheap white thermal paste, changed it to Arctic Sliver 5 and now the fan stays at level 1.

If you haven't already tired it, there is an optional controller that operates much the same as a standard BD/DVD controller. PS3 Blu-ray DVD Remote

Good Luck!

Forest Man

It might solve the problem;)
