Building new 5.1 system

Need some advice for a new 5.1 system-
Room size is about 12w x 10d and I wired for 5.1 sound with no intentions of changing to 7.1.
Looking around it seems that there are some good 5.1 receivers, but the selection is limited. Can I use a 7.1 instead?
TIA-

Well that would open up my options somewhat. Are there any downsides from doing this? Will the receiver process the sound into 7.1, but will I only hear 5.1 and potentially miss something?

Most DVDs and Blu-Ray movies are made with 5.1 audio channels. A very few are made with 6 or 7 channels but you really won't miss much even in those rare cases.

Not a problem at all, even has some +'s

Not at all, when you initially set-up the receiver you will either manully program it with your actual speaker configuration, or it will automatically detect the speaker configuration, and you will not lose any program material. :D

In fact, once the receiver knows you have a 5.1 set-up, if/when it receives a 7.1 audio program, the receiver will automatically re-route and combine the surround backs' program material with the surround L/R speakers signal!

Damn these things are getting smart! ;)

Having a 7.1 receiver may have additional advantages, depending on the make/model:
a) Able to power a 2nd zone in addition to the 5.1 main zone :D or
b) Able to bi-amp your mains (a debatable proposition) or
c) Power a pair of presence/height/width channels .

In most cases, the 7.1 receivers are actually at the "heart-of-the-envelope" price wise and provide more value then the 5.1 receivers these days.

Well this is good news- I like smart electronic components- will these even figure out what type of beer I like:D

Now I can start looking at specific brans/models, and I'm definitely open for suggestions/guidance. Something in the $500-800 range.

thanks for your help

The search begins

After a little searching, I've come up with these receivers that should satisfy my needs. Any thoughts on these are greatly appreciated.

1- Marantz SR5004
2- Onkyo TX-SR707
3- Yamaha RX-V863 (older model)

All three would be good choice

FWSIV,

All three would be a strong choice, available price might be the driver to your decision. I take it you have already read the available online reviews.

Marantz - reputation for SQ, ~$800
Onkyo - loyal following, ~$700
Yamaha - great amp section, ~$600

If it was me, I would get the Marantz if budget was not a factor, the Yammy if budget was a factor.

I have seen the marantz at a cheaper price- under $700 (new).

How would the Yamaha RX-V863 compare to the RX-V765?

kind regards-

I am leaning towards the marantz, I see A4less mentioned a bunch- how realiable are the refurbs?
As reliable as new units, since refubs came straight from manuf factory

A4Less offers 1 year warranty on refubs - 'nuf said ;)

Can I use either 6 ohm and 8 ohm speakers with the marantz? I checked the manual and it seems that I can- just trying to verify. Also, would I need any special setup on the AVR, or just connect the speakers and this smarter than me receiver will do the rest? Can 6 and 8 ohm speakers be used at the same time (eg fronts as 6 ohm and rears as 8 ohm)?

You would be find with either or both, IMO always pick speakers first, then go avr to make sure that they can be driven properly for your room and your liking.

Thanks for the advice- I have picked out the avr, but not purchased yet. I'm still shopping for speakers, and then I guess I'll settle on the avr.
