building my 1st home theatre system...suggestions

been out of 'hi-fi + stereo' for 25 years....now am returning and wish to build my 1st home theatre system...Music is VERy important to me, as is picture quality...thumping bass is not my scene nor are car chases and special effects...rugby on tv is important to me, most other 'sports' are not...a little confused about things like HDMI interfaces, THX certification..NEw vs used equpment?....how important are these? any suggestions...assistance is MUCH appreciated... thank you very much

Do not fall into the trap (hype) of marketing, specially on 'magic' cables.
9 times out of 10, the basic cheap cables will work for most needs (that is until you consider long runs of over 30 feet)
