IMO i would break it down something like this, plus or minus a bit
$10-25k entry level
$25-75k moderate
$75-150k high end
$150k+ exotic

some might even consider my labels conservative
Well then...it is my fervent hope to someday reach "entry level".

Um.. entry level is HTIB audio
Again, the list/definition in context was given as a dedicated theater - somewhat different than a list that simply defined what you could spend on AV products or a system.

And that would not be a bad place to be!

Um.. entry level is HTIB audio, an inexpensive projector and a painted-on wall screen, in a spare bedroom. That can be done for a whole lot less than 10k$. For a lot of people, it's a fun and entirely adaquate solution. Pile up spare blankets in the corners and you can even get some acoustical trapping.
I am talking about purpose-built DEDICATED home theater rooms............not an HTIB customer.........i do not consider those "home theaters".........those are surround sound tv systems.
as for someone slapping a projector on the wall in a spare room, well they have the beginnings of a home theater but i dont really consider those a finished product until they have all the aspects that make it a true home theater.

i have a modest $6k into my setup, but it is not a "home theater" and never will be because its in a common area (great room), not a dedicated room, and is used for daily tv viewing.

im in the same boat!

with a decent sized spare room and a $10-15k budget i could be quite happy with the resulting setup, factoring in doing the labor myself.

for me, at that price point all the money would go towards better equipment and total room treatment, and only a small percent to aesthetics.

Ambiguous Brown Paint Color

Call me lazy but I hate picking paint colors. Any chance you could update the article with the real paint name? Thanks for the great article!
