How are the entries selected in the shootout? I didn't see entries from PSB, Paradigm, Axiom in this shootout. Did they decline your invitation? Did they get invited? :D
I'm don't want to go back and read through it all if I don't have to but I had the impression that this was a bunch of guys with a bunch of speakers having some fun and sharing the results with us. I think they might have been drinking. :D

Being restricted to budget audio, I didn't know any of those companies made budget minded products... unless you count buying used off ebay.

PSB Alpha series, Paradigm Atoms, Axiom M20s ..$250 - $300.

All well below the maximum price speaker there.

I think Alex's explanation is more on the money. Thanks for the consideration. :)

Im looking to get started with just a simple 2 channel setup for my computer and go from there. Would the Behringer's be able to handle the occasional rap song without a sub? I don't need to feel the bass, but it needs to be there in some form if you know what I mean.

I listen to a lot of classical, but feel the occasional need to listen to something bass heavy.

The Behringers are not only frequency range limited but they are SPL limited. Trying to get a 50Hz thump out of them at 100db probably isn't going to be the sweetest sound you hear that day. They do a good job above 80Hz for ~$150. One of those Dayton subs for ~$200 takes you the rest of the way. That is the cheapest way I know to do it. I lived with that set up for a month at a clip a couple of different times and was pretty happy with the arrangement.

These things are kind of big though. They will make short work of desk space.

Seriously, I have no life.
This is the second budget shootout in which the Yamaha NS-333 did well.

I don't get it...I have a set with an NS-444 center...and I feel like I get zero mid or low(er) range out of them. I recently bought Energy C-100's and a CC-50 and it's like night and day in the mid and low(er) ranges.

Anybody here have the NS-333/444 and have any thoughts about them?

I may try them again...
Try them again and listen to the sound when you use the balance control- if the mid-bass improves, either the speaker wire is connected to the terminals incorrectly (it happens) or the mid-bass driver is wired in reverse (that happens, too). It could also be that the driver's voice coil is connected in reverse, too. Rare, but it happens.

Oh ... maybe I need to get off the herb. It's one of my subscribed threads under Speakers and I just saw the unanswered question with no regard for the date. What did you end up with?

If I was a Freudian, one might think there was some significance that this happened on Valentines Day.
Did either of you want to tell the group anything?:D

Pinnacle P5.2 didn't get a fair hearing -- Needed break-in

"Pinnacle P5.2 - These speakers caused a bit of good-natured ribbing at my expense when I admitted they were from my own theater system - just added to 'round out the field.' Even though I had recently replaced all the Pinnacles in my theater with a different brand, I'd always been happy with their performance and expected them to do well. The evaluation comments ranged from "Overly bright" and "Harsh" to just "ACK!." Even I rated them lower than their competition, and I had always thought them to be very detailed without being too bright. I still think that about the P6.3 towers, so maybe my satisfaction with the 5.2's as surrounds wasn't too far off the mark. The average overall rating was 2.64." (- Gene DellaSala, Audioholics)

I have the Pinnacle Platinum Performance P6.3 towers and P6.2 bookshelf speakers, and must point out that the excellent tweeters in these (and the P5.2 bookshelf speakers criticized in this review) did sound overly bright when new, but mellowed out after about 50 hours of use. I believe this is the only reason the P5.2 speakers fared so poorly in comparison to the other models here.

In a detailed review of tower speakers a few years before, Gene DellaSala recommended the Pinnacle Gold Reference series, which is basically the predecessor to the Pinnacle Platinum Performance series, except that the latter are made with engineered plastic-veneer cabinets instead of woodgrain veneer.

The proof is that I recently purchased the Pinnacle Aerogel Gold tower speakers, supposedly the apex (I hesitate to write the "pinnacle"!) of the now-discontinued Gold Reference line, and discovered that my Platinum P6.3 speakers are actually more accurate, though not as mellow or rich in the bass, and I am happy to continue using them for movie surround sound, while using the Aerogels for stereo music.
