Thanks for the formula! So in theory I should be "only" percievng a 10*log(250/110)=3.6dB increase going from my Pioneer 1015 to the XPA-5 in 3 ch mode. But I can say that the impact on dynamic presentation seems much more pronounced to me (and quite obvious). Things that sounded compressed and tinkly on the 1015 at volume sound much more natural (non tinkly/ not compressed) with the XPA-5. Must be more due to reserve power?

Found this on line regarding SPL and subjective perceptions:

"Sound level, loudness, and sound pressure are not the same things.
There are variations in individual perception of the strength of sound.
The sound pressure measured twice as much gives 6 dB more level.
The sound perceived twice as loud needs roughly a sound level increase by 10 dB.
The human perception of loudness is perceived differently from each subject.
In other words it is one's own perception of sound and it is subjective of
sound pressure level SPL."

I agree with you. That's why I qualified it by adding "from SPL stand point". I agree in reality a 250W amp will outperform a 110W amp if you need the power. As to the 10 dB blablabla thing, it is only a rule of thumb that is highly inexact.

Sorry I know I tend to get too sensitive to the technical stuff but I do focus on good things too. That's why I pay attention to your posts.:D

Mathematical equations and measurements only account for so much. The extra power will give more headroom and boost the overall performance of the system. The differences in sound quality will be subtle, but they will exist.

I'm going to have to agree with Warpdrv and say you shouldn't notice much difference. If it were me, I'd try and grab the Parasound if you don't mind the visual blemishes and don't care about the balanced connections... if you do want balanced inputs or can't get the Parasound, then buy the Emotiva. I think you'll be happy with either one, but the Parasound is a good Amp for the money, provided it is in good working order...

I use Emotiva gear currently and wouldn't hesitate to add another of their Amps when I'm ready to do so...
