The receiver you purchase, in general, does not have to much to do with what speaker might work for you. What's your room size? What are you going to do with it?

If you've got a large room, stay away from less efficient speakers. If you've got a small room, watch out for rear ported speakers too close to the wall. If you're going to expand later to surround sound, consider the matching speaker now, not later.

edit: Oh yeah - go listen to a lot of speakers.

We need more information. Room dimensions, listening habits such as really loud or moderate listening levels, etc. The more info you can give us, the more closley the speakers would match your needs.

Like corey said speakers dont really match with receivers. Speakers however unlike receivers dont really go out of date, if you dont over power speakers they will last for years.

Get a better store :)

Everything depends on budget really.

Once you have your budget then you can start making choices at your level.

If you are on a low budget then look on craigslist and ebay. You can find some great deals.

As far as a 606 goes. You may consider a 705. It's got more power and right now runs at around 400 at accessories4less.

That's a reciever that was going aroun 800 I believe when it first came out.

But speakers should always come first. You can get a better receiver later, but speakers should last you forever if you get the right ones. If you are doing music then make sure you get a couple really good bookshelves or towers. Infinity Beta 20s are my fronts and I think they are very versatile for the price one ebay these days. Around 50 each.

Just avoid Bose.

speaker recommendation.

You mention bookshelf ,yet ou have a medium sized room. Is there a specific size limitation on the speakers? Becuase medium room and meduim loud usually, but not always dictates larger front speakers, e.g. towers.

Okay , here is a very good bookshelf solution

2 pairs of Cambridge Audio S30s at $219 per pair. http://www.wildwestelectronics.net/cambridge-audio-s30-speaker.html

1 subwoofer, Dayton Sub-120 HT $155.23

Speakers don't match AVRs ( receivers). The speaker ohms and sensitivity are the only matching factors. Most speakers are 8 ohms. 4 ohm speakers require twice as much current and twice as much power and typically need a special high current receiver. The sensitivity is a logrithmic measurement that determines how power hungry ( or visa versa how well it utilizes power) a speaker is . Low sensitivity ( 80 dB)requires a lot of power, Medium sensitiviy ( 90 dB), uese a moderate anmount of power and high sensitivity (100 dB) is very power efficient.

If you pick 8 ohm speakers with medium or high sensitivity your receivers will power them fine.
