My father in law lent me an old sub he isn't using. It is a brand that I have never heard of before and I am not home to check it. I think it may be damaged, but I wanted to ask around. The symptoms:

1) It only produces any sound when turned to near the full volume. In the manual it recommends against having it set at this level.

2) Whenever I adjust the volume knob it crackles.

I will not be buying a replacement any time soon. I was simply curious if this sounded like a problem.

thanks,

Sounds like it is pretty old. When you can, lets us know the make and model so we can further diagnose the problem.:)

The make and model would be helpful.

How is your receiver set up? How is it wired up? Seriously, we need to know this stuff.

Here is the setup.

Onkyo TX-SR 504 Receiver.
Miller and Kreisel Sub. I couldn't find the manual and didn't see the model number on the sub itself.

The LFE out on the reciever is connected to the L and R low level inputs on the sub (It doesn't have a dedicated LFE input. I used a y-splitter to connect it to both inputs). The crossover in the receiver is set to 80. The crossover on the sub is set to its maximum of 150 (I believe this is the way to do it when I am not actually using the sub's built-in crossover).

Let me know if you need more information and thanks for the help.

Just to recap, the sub crackles and pops if I change the volume (even if there is no signal and the reciever is turned off). Also there is little to no sound unless I have it set at or near the maximum volume.

My father-in-law may have been running it at near full volume for a number of years, which I fear may have damaged it. If this is the case is it possible to jsut replace the driver or could other parts be damaged as well? Or am I on the completely wrong track?

My internet access is a bit spotty at the moment so it may take a few days to respond if you need more info.

Again, thanks for the help. I have found this forum to be continually friendly and helpful.
