Hi guys

Just bough a new Yamaha HTR-6190 (RX-V1800 equivalent) (WOOHOO!!) and I put in in my a/v rack. The thing is that I'm a bit wooried about spacing on top for breathing. Even with no speakers plugged in it (only video processing), it's getting kinda hot. Do you think 1.75" is enough? :S

It will actually probably run cooler once you start using some of the power that's just setting there.(play it).

1.75'' is a little tight but if the bottom and sides are open you may be ok.

That's real tight. The tightest I've stuffed my 1500 is a little over 2" , and it warmed the upper shelf rather well.
Does the 6190 have a fan?
Can you give it more room?

It's placed inside an audio/video furniture piece

The sides/front/back are empty. Only the receiver is sitting there. I don't really have another alternative :S

And no the 6190/1800 doesn't have a fan. Would it be a good idea to put a thermometer on top of it and give you the reading?

BTW, the upper shelf you see there has the exact same height. And on top of it all is the TV itself.

I hate to disagree, but if it runs hot when idling, it will not run cooler when it is actually driving the speakers. it will likely, at least in theory, run just slightly hotter depend on how loud you play it.

I have a little more room than that in my rack with my Onkyo and what I did was get dual computer fans on Ebay. It has two little fans and they plug into an outlet and you plug that in to the ac outlet on the back of your receiver. The fans will then only run when the receiver is on and they keep it cool to the touch now. They also will increase speed when they sense a hotter temp. All in all it cost me about 25 including shipping and I think it was a great purchase. They are really quiet too I can only sometimes hear them when I am really driving the amp, but my rack is about 2 ft from my couch so it's across the room you're good. Hope this helps

Also I didn't specify this when I said that I can only hear them when I am really pushing the amp what I meant was that I can hear it when I am pushing the amp really hard and everything is really loud (explosion) then it goes to someone laying in a bed with no sound then I can hear them but with normal dialogue and background score music you can't hear the fans even from 2 ft.

Would you have a brand/model for those fans? They work with a temp sensor?

That stand is wide open with plenty of ventilation. Receivers get warm but I don't think there is a problem here.

I agree with MDS, you should be fine.

But if you are worried about temps, the links I gave will help you get a fan setup for under 15.00
The first link is just to give you an idea, the others you can search for the size and expense you want to do.

And unless you want to do a ac/dc converter or soldering, I suggest looking at the AC fans (which will be plug and play).

I know what you were trying to get at, but that is not the case here.
Assuming you had meant, that it has a thermal fan built in.;) (which it does not)

Clearly the more power that is used will heat up the AVR, but if it had a thermal fan (as some higher end does) then the fan would not come on until it reaches a certain temp (which is not normally at idle).

With the sides open as they are, it shouldn't be a huge concern.
I was picturing more of enclosed space from your original description.

I dont have much concern now that I see your stand. I think you will be fine.

I was just going off of what I have seen with my system; it seems to get hotter just setting there vs. playing and the fan isnt "in-play". I believe Seth gave an explaination once before but I dont remember what it was. Regardless' I think the OP will be fine with his set-up.

My RX-V1600 has about the same amount of room above it, and it runs pretty hot too, but I'm also using an external 7 channel amp, so it's not even pushing any power, and it still runs pretty hot. I don't think it will be too much of a problem, just make sure you go into the advanced setup and set the internal fans to run continuously.

Actually the Yamaha RX series run dam hot!..not warm. The manual states something like 4-6" of clearance on the top for cooling, when you crank that unit up it will almost boil water...my RX-v 2500 would get smoking hot but never shutdown and yes they do have fans that come on at a certain temperature or you can set it to be on all the time.

I ran thru the whole menus and I haven't seen such an option.

Same question but this time for an XPA-5. I have 8.5" of space between shelves. XPA-5 is 7.75". 3/4 of an inch seems a bit tight, especially for a power amp.

what do you guys think?

p.s. I emailed them 3 days ago... I havent got a response yet :S

Don't hold your breath waiting for an e-mail response. I had abismal luck trying to correspond with them over e-mail. Almost never got a response. Give them a call. They were always nice on the phone. Not always helpful, but nice.

HAHA! Not helpful?! lol They should know their stuff...

But again... I live in Canada and calling there would be a long distance call ($$$)
