The B&W 805's are excellent speakers. Excellent detail, and clarity.

PM this guy. He is a friend of mine and just went to help a friend of his pick-up and set-up his 805 system. He himself is a B&W owner.

There has been some talk about these speakers sounding just as good, if not better then the 805's.

Good show Mazer on the 630's...

there is a good shootout, where those speakers were blindly chosen over the 805's... just thought you should read it, not that the 805's are not good speakers...

Its the coverstory, I pasted the link for you to download it..

I bought those Dana 630 speakers, and they are nice... for the price...

You won't go wrong. B & W speakers are correctly voiced.

I listened to some 805S speakers the other day off a Yamaha 1800. I really thought they were nice, a little bright, but good mid/midbass. I thought he said $2400 a pair! We didn't discuss anything else in that room:eek:.

Personally IMO there are better speakers in the B&W price range that easily best them. I was floored when I first heard the 805S but I had nothing to compare them to. After some more auditioning of I just found them to not offer much value when compared to other brands. These are some speakers that I found better than the B&W and for a lower price.

Dali Mentor 2
PSB Platinum M2
Aerial Acoustics Model 5B
Totem Model-1 Sig

I would love to hear Dalis and/or Totems. Unfortunately, there is nowhere within reasonable driving distance to do so.:(

I think this says it all & fits the bill perfectly,i think alot of hype surrounds B&W with the whole recording studio thing, people love to flaunt how many studios use B&W's,this means nothing in a home enviroment.

There are lot's better values in speakers over the B&W product line, demo as many as possible & only use the speakers listed specs as a running guide & not a buying bible, dont be afraid to rely on your ears, they will tell you what speaker best fits your needs, this is something a spec can never do.

Another thing to keep in mind is name recognizition,B&W advertises on all fronts very heavily, this market saturation adverising techique costs a fortune & add's to the overall out the door cost of the speaker drastically & does nothing for sound quality.

Overall B&W uses very sound speaker designs that work well but so do many others without the massive costs assopciated with B&W,if your dead set on going with a pair of 805's then i'd reccomend buying used only, this will bring the cost more in line with the true value of the speakers performance vs cost ratio.

While B&W's upper models(802D, 801D, 800D) are incredible products - which virtually no resonance of any kind - and extreme linearity - I don't really see much of this filtering down into the lower priced units. If you had say a budget of $12k for your 2 main speakers I would recommend without hesitation the 802D - there is no monopole at any price that exceeds it in regards to transparency. But under that price, I would probably recommend looking into other brands if you want maximum value. If you will consider buying used, the late 80's B&W 801 Matrix Series II or Series III is going to far outperform any new monopole you can buy at it's current market value, which is in the $2k range on eBay. Sometimes I recommend cheaper speakers out of the box -- like the B&W CM7 -- but to be blunt -- all of these have serious compromises. The old B&W Matrix 801 I recommend does not have any substantial compromises: it is very linear, has good off axis response and it has very low resonance(something which I have yet to find in any reasonably priced retail closed speaker system).

three most promising B&W technologies are 1. Dimand tweeter, 2. FST Kavler, 3. Rohesel bass. all three of meterial are nearly ideal for what they do.

however, 805s has NONE of them.

with that said, personally, i think B&W 8 series speakers are the best looking speakers available. The woodwork are the best in the industry. the curve box make other rectangular speakers looks ugly. If you can't appreciate the style and the workmanship. u might look elsewhere for better value.

i believe the curving box add lots cost to the speaker. comparing to other menufacture who also offering curve box. for example, KEF and Mirage, and those are also quite expensive, too.

another thing to consider is long term relibility. on the 800 series, B&W use dimand, kevlar, and rehesal. all of them are going to last forever. 10, 20 years easily without any problem. On the other hand, paper cone are not as duable. My parents has a pair of Matrix 801 Series II. both tweeter (alumium) and mid range (kevlar) are working perfectly after 18 years of useage. the bass (paper) started to break down after 10 years. on the new 800 series with rehesal, i will think it will last much longer than 10 years.

Plus I don't know about your dealer but the one near me just increased the price on all B&W speakers because of the weakness of the USD. The 805S are now $3000! That puts them in Dynaudio Contour 1.4 range which IMO just obliterates them.

I heard the 805S and S1.4 side by side at a store 4 or 5 months ago. I wouldn't say the S1.4 is better, but more so different.

For either though, I would rather spend $3000 in other ways.

Is this true? I haven't checked at my dealer, but wow. That's huge. Once you hit that $3K limit, they're up against some stiff competition. I remember the N805's were $2000/pr, then when the "s" came out, it went up to $2500, and if this is true, that's another $500 increase and they just keep getting further and further away from what I'd spend on a pair of speakers...not that B&W gives a hoot about what 1 person would do.

I should check with my dealer and inquire.

Yeah and $500 isn't a lot compared to their other speakers. The 802D for example used to be $12000/pair and now they are $14000! The lower end lines didn't go up as much. My friend bought a pair of 685 for $600 and now they are $650. The CM1 used to be $900/pair and now they are $1000.

Don't forget guys, the US dollar is falling like a stone in value against other currencies, such as sterling and the Euro. I bet B & W have actually not increased the price at all. Those currency changes get marked up by the importers and dealers, and that is usually a minimum of 40% for each.

Get prepared for a lot more sticker shock from the falling dollar.
