Hello i am new to this forum, just seeking advice apon the B&W 683 s2 loud speakers. For the price are the B&W 683s worth thr price? I want to eventually get the entire set, unless there is another speaker of equivalent for a better price.

More importantly, do you like the speakers? Can you get them at a price you find acceptable? What speakers do you have now? What other speakers have you compared them to? Speakers are highly subjective, I briefly heard some of this series a few years ago and was unimpressed, but this was in a showroom with not the best setup and didn't spend much time with them either, so not much to go on....

Welcome to the forum....

Thanks to the warm welcome! I own a pair of the B&W dm-601 s3 book shelfs, sony ss-f5000p polk t15s and some klipsch reference.

The Bowers and Wilkins are being used as my front channals. I want a well balanced speaker that can perform well with both movie and music. Of course B&W speakers are a huge upgrade to what i curently use. I just want to make sure i obtain the best quality for the price.

What is the price? A review of these speaker from nearly three years ago said the retail price was $1650 per pair. Now that B&W has a new line of speakers, what's their price? If the price is the same $1650 per pair, I'd pass.

Reviews by big name audio magazines are, in my opinion, questionable. I'd quickly read the text of the review, but pay more attention to the measurements page.

In particular, look at figures 1 and 3. Figure 1 shows the impedance of these speaker dips as low as 3 ohms at 124 Hz and again at about 400-500 Hz. Between those frequencies, at about 200-300 Hz there is a rise in impedance that suggests some kind of cabinet resonance occurs. That impedance blip may look small, but its a warning sign (see also figure 3 at 200 Hz). Figure 1 also suggests (but does not guarantee) that the 683 might present a difficult load for a receiver.

Figure 3 shows frequency response curve of the 683. I want to point out two features that makes me believe these speakers are flawed. First, at 200 Hz in both the red and green traces, there is a blip which corresponds to the impedance blip at the same frequency. The reviewer avoids saying anything bad, but suggests this glitch does exist, and avoids further discussion. I wonder if it might be an audible flaw.

Second is the very ragged frequency response above about 1500 Hz, of the mid range driver combined with the tweeter (blue trace). Variations of more than ±5 dB are definitely audible. B&W's famous yellow Kevlar mid range driver is infamous for a highly audible and noisy resonance at roughly 3500-4000 Hz. It is clearly seen in the blue trace as a prominent peak just below 4000 Hz. Depending on the music being played, those peaks & valleys can be noticeable and even ugly sounding.

In summary, I wouldn't pay $1650 per pair for these speakers. But I'm not buying them. If you can get them for a lower price, you might like them enough to pull the trigger. As a guess, that price might be no more than $1000 per pair.

I'm gonna assume a budget around 1500, if that's the case I'd def take a look around. In my opinion and from what I've noticed, once you break the 1k mark, speakers really start to take on their own character and it becomes more difficult to make recommendations. My top votes would be to take a look at svs, b&w, Martin Logan, system audio, off the top of my head.

Ouch 3ohms! That might hurt my Denon amp. I compared them to definitive tech. Elac and martin logans. The next model higher(700 series) of B&Ws is selling for $2400 a pair. I loved the way they sound but hearing they may drop to 3ohms may not be so good.

No dealers, internet direct. Others in that vein are SVS, Ascend Acoustics, Hsu Research as well as others...I have no dealers anywhere near me and do my shopping that way.

I kinda had a feeling there were no dealers.

Will these two brands work well with the Denon avr s-910w? Ill want a speaker with more room for improvment to a better amp later on.

Thanks

Dealers can drive the price up and make it tough to buy.

Somewhat a lightweight Denon so I'd try and keep the impedance and sensitivity as high as I could for speakers....I'd aim at at least 90dB sensitivity and no less than nominal 6 ohm sensitivity.

ps the lower your listening level requirements are, the more you could change such parameters...

Alright that helps! It will be either svs or Philharmonic, for my choice. They seem reasonable on price and performance.

I’ve always liked buying from a guy who is on the same forum as me. Kinda like a local hero lol.

I like the idea that philharmonic speakers arent over priced. The BMR Philharmonitor sounds like the winner in my book. I am the kind of guy who still enjoys the 3 way desighn. Tho im not to familiar with the ribbon tweeters. Still worth an audition of these speakers.

Feel free to email him any questions he responds pretty fast 1 hour or less.
He also said The BMR are a step above the competition that he’s tested so far.
