Looking for some overall opinions on the Boston Acoustics speakers that Circuit City is starting to carry. (not in stock yet at my local store)

In particular the VRCB center channel. Looks like it could be a little weak comparied to the towers. (Frequency response = 70Hz - 20kHz) http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Boston-Acoustics-Center-Channel-Speaker-VRCB/sem/rpsm/oid/159495/catOid/-12950/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

and the VR2 towers http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Boston-Acoustics-Tower-Speaker-VR2/sem/rpsm/oid/159494/catOid/-12950/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

I will go and listen when they are in stock. Just curious, don't hear much about them here at AH.

Any chance you could also use a tower as your center?

I took a listen to them a few months ago at BB/Magnolia and I think the price at the time was $600. In any case, to me they sounded a bit to my ears right so I did not spend much more time with them. I remember they had a good soundstage and presense and at $424 I think they are definitely worth a listen and if they are your cup of tea, that's a good price. In the same price range I liked the B&W 602's S3 much better. They sell for around $550 if I recall correctly.

I spent the extra money on the VR3 towers. I think that they are by far the best speakers that Boston has produced in many a year. For my center I chose to invest in an oldie but goodie. A 3-way Boston VR10 from ebay. If you are not going to invest in a good subwoofer then hold out for the discontinued VR920. Personally I chose to have a great subwoofer handle everything under 80hz so the VR10 is a perfect match.

No room for a tower as my center. I'll have to go with a traditional center or a bookshelf on its side.

Not impressive... spend a few more dollars and go listen to some B&W's... got to go to a dedicated retailer.

Vr2/vr3

I noticed that you said in an earlier post that circuit city is carrying the BA
VR2 for 424$. Is the 424$ for 1 speaker or is that for a pair?
And is there that big of differ between VR2 and VR3?

Check my sig for my speakers.

I have the VR2's and I think they absolutely ROCK! They sound great and even have good output down to about 28Hz. Boston is definitely not the best out there, but I'm a "bang for the buck" kinda guy, so I think they're stuff is great for the money. Of course, I got my VR2's on sale at Magnolia for $300 for the pair, so that might be swaying my judgement a little.

My only complaint is that the PV500 sub I bought is a little weak. It's great in it's frequency range, but it only plays down to about 25Hz. That's why I ended up adding the Earthquake sub.

Give 'em a shot. You won't be disappointed.

Having gone through some fairly extensive equipment changes, additions and subtractions over the past four years, I have come to the conclusion that a few of the Boston Acoustics offerings suit my tastes quite well. I'm currently running VR3s and a VR12 in my main HT setup, CR65s and a VR10 in my secondary setup and I'm in the process of competing my bedroom set consisting of CR55s, a CRC and Boston Bravos. Apparently I'm fairly fond of the sonic signature that BA provides with the VR and CR lines of speakers... :)

Similar to Sholling's sentiment above, I felt that the VR3 towers are some of the best 'bang for the buck' speakers available. While their retail prices aren't great, you can find these in the $650-$850 range. I have found these to be quite accurate for highs and mids as well as deep down to the low 30s (Hz-wise), allowing you to save up for a solid sub if you don't have one. They're extremely sensitive allowing you to drive them quite loudly w/very little power, pretty attractive for a vinyl finish and offer a wide soundstage to boot.

While the VR2s are good performers in their own right, I would strongly recommend any listener that is pleased w/the VR2s performance to take a lengthy listening to the VR3s and consider saving for them. If you can find the VR2s for a good price, though, I think you'd be pretty pleased with their performance as they have many of the same characteristics of the VR3s.

I considered the VRC when scoping out my center options, however I held off and purchased a VR920 for some time and was quite pleased with it, then upgraded to a VR12 that has performed even better and seems to be more suited to match the VR3s than the 920 was. While the VRC looks fairly capable, most folk's feedback I've seen that have compared the VRC with the older VRs (VR920, VR10 & VR12) lean strongly towards the older lines... -TD

I'm interested in taking a listen to the Vr3's for a 2 channel set up, but can't find anywhere to listen to them. Circuit City only has the VR2's. I have the HK 3480 receiver and am looking for 2 floorstanders for my first real system.

Try looking here on BA's website to see what dealers are in your location.... -TD

I actually prefer the sound of the VR2 to the VR3.
As I was listening to both, I felt that the VR3 tended to sounded muddier overall.
