Hello,
I know it's been ages but I've been meaning to get back to this thread to report on my experience w/ these speakers. As stated above, I went with a 5 speaker set of VS series from Boston Acoustics. 2xVS-336, 1xVS-224, 2xVS-260. I am very pleased with these speakers. They look nice and they sound great and they're only running on an HTR-5790 (I had to return my RX-A3000 because of audio delay problems with my CRT TV and 2nd zone). Granted, I'm no expert. I haven't heard many 'high end' speakers before (if any at all) and my last un-matched set was anything but. However I did audition all of the speakers that Best Buy and American had to offer and none of them sounded this good. As I sit here listening to an acoustic live album (STS9 - Axe The Cables) I am just amazed at the clarity and 'smoothness' of the audio. It's truely beautiful. I like listening in Neo:6 Music mode. It really helps the music to surround you.
Anyway, I'm pleased with my decision and thanks for the nudge Jim. I know many in these forums tried to steer me towards other brands that they said would beat this $6K set of speakers even at the $3K price I was able to get them at, but I was lured by the big name, good but limited reviews, and stylish black gloss and curvy look, and of course the 50% discount. It's hard to pass all of that up even with others claiming other speakers may be better yet having never heard these. They also look nice with my black glossy Polk microPRO 3000 (which some poo-pooed also but I think it's a great little musical sub).
All that said, it's too bad they're discontinuing that line. At least that's what I was told. There are still some available on their website and probably online. If you can get a complete set for anywhere the $3K I was able to buy them at, I say, do it. They look good and sound great. Of course don't forget that amps play a part too. I think the RX-A3000 sounded better with these speakers than my HTR-5790. Too bad it was giving me audio delay issues.
Ok, that's enough babbling. I just had to report back because I said I would.
Take care,
Mike
P.S. As a fun side note to my mishaps with the insurance company's repalcement service... My first order of speakers had a fork lift driven into them at some point during the shipping process. Big chunks taken out of the top of each tower. I had to send back both of them. With the apparently limited supply still available I was worried they wouldn't have any more. Fortunately they did. Another 3 weeks later I finally recieved the two towers completing my 5 speaker set.
