Boston Acoustics M Subwoofer

I am looking for some input on what may or may not be a problem with my new Boston Acoustics M Series Subwoofer. When the subwoofer gets hit with a loud explosion the sound distorts sort of a putting sound and it is really annoying. Here is what I have. I am using a Marantz 6008 to setup the speakers using Audyessy. Gain is on half. Tried polarity on 0 and 180. Crossover set by Audyssey to 100 I reset it to 80. Audyssey set db to -12. I reran Audyssey with sub gain at 1/4. Audessey set the db at -1.5. There is very little sound coming from the sub now. Explosions and deep bass are almost no existent.
I turned the volume up to 4 and the sub gain to 1/2 it has fair bass now but loud bass rattles the speakers bad. This is supposed to be a good sub and the rep. from Boston Acoustics said this sub will not make these types of noises. Anyhow I can not seems to get a balance of decent bass and no distortion on loud inputs.
I have a Klipsch 10"(do not know the model) paid around $500 for it and it knocks your socks off on loud explosions and other loud sound effects and bass using the same Audyessy settings.
I just assumed that this (I thought) was a really good subwoofer and would play just as loud as the Klipsch. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be or should I just get rid of it? If a replacement with a different sub is suggested which one would you suggest at around $1000.?

It's a small subwoofer with a 10" driver. Playing back movies with deep powerful bass at high levels will cause the driver to bottom out. My advice would be to sell it and go get an SVS or Power Sound Audio subwoofer. With $1000-1300, you'll get a sub that will knock your socks off and blow that little Boston out of the water in both sound quality and output.

Did you check to make sure the bolts holding the sub are all tight?
I am not a fan of BA subs, for $1000 you can do MUCH better...

the vtf15 will make you rethink what loud is, lol VTF-15H Subwoofer clean with a ton of output and rite around your budget, if getting a new sub is in the option list that is the guy....

I don't like running audy, I balance and cross my systems with an spl meter and have good results, but it sounds like there is something wrong with your sub or settings... If the HSU is an option you won't regret a purchase like that, I have dual vtf2's and they are so aggressive it can get out of hand, I cracked my ceiling twice now...

I have been to A LOT of audio shops all over the country and I have not yet heard anything worth bringing home in the field of subwoofers, that can compete with the value you get from ID companies {Rythmic, SVS, HSU, ect}, I have demoed most brands {I think all but funk, lol} and HSU is wins everytime when it comes to bang for buck.... Truthfully, audio shops and place like best buy just don't stock any impressive subs with the exception of JL audio {$$$$$$} I have yet to be impressed...

At $1K, HSU, SVS, Rythmik, and PSA all offer excellent options. I'd probably go with dual SVS PB-1000 for $948 shipped. But a single HSU VTF-15H, Rythmik FV15HP, SVS PC12-Plus, or PSA XS13 are all great choices too. How big is your room?

Thank you for all the suggestions. After researching them and due to space and marital limitations I chose the SVS SBS13-Ultra. It is more than I wanted to spend but after reading the reviews and a 45 day free trial I could not pass it up.Fortunately I am able to return my BA sub.
