Bose Acoustimass Question

Hey guys, I just bought a used Acoustimass 5.1 system for a GREAT price. I also have a Sony Receiver in that same deal. My question.. I have heard many terrible things about BOSE, but can I purchase a receiver/speaker combo for around $300 that will be any better than the BOSE? Also, I am not real happy about the bass that the Acoustimass module creates (it is non-powered.) Can I purchase a separate powered sub to connect to my sub output on my receiver and have both running??

Thanks,
Chad

Try selling the Bose on Craiglist and put that towards a better system. There are a couple pair of bookshelves I can recommend in the $300 range.

This would be a far far better system .....

Cambridge Audio S30 speakers $219
YamahaRX-361 $164
=====
$383

There are many other solutions :)

And yes you can add a powered sub, wait an get a good sub though SVS and Hsu make good subs starting at around $400.

Yeah, dump the Blose system and get something worth listening to.

If someone had paid you to take that Bose system off your hands you would have still gotten ripped off, IMO. Midcow made a very good suggestion, the Yamaha RX-V361 is a very humble 5.1 receiver that can still stand fairly tall amongst its more powerful, pricier bretheren in the AVR market. I have one now, and it does a great job, until I can upgrade to the V663, due to HDMI connectivity and a few other things.

$300 total is really pushing the limits of what you'll be able to get, but get off on a good foot, save up as you go and add to the system, and what you end up with will blow that Bose POS right out of the water. :)
