Book shelf speaker stability with stands

I'm sure the following scenario and set of questions is incredibly stoooopid, but here it goes anyway.

The wife is about to finish remodeling the living room complete with new TV. Currently we have one of those gawdy Entertainment stands that the speakers fit into (I KNOW, I KNOW, I was out voted).

Anyway, the speakers were protected from my "enthusiastic" boys (5 & 3). With the new set up, I either have the option of bringing my Quad 22L's back into the living room or buying her some Quad 12L's with stands.

I guess I'm asking if the book shelves speakers on stands will be as stable as far as having children running through the house and imitating the Rocky movies that have to be on non-stop? Would the floor standers be better? The house is old with hardwood floors. Anytime you jump or even walk heavy, the floor moves.

Please chime in, I've only had floor standers.

Thanks,

Best Solution ...

Measure the reach of the 5 year old on his tiptoes with his hand raised overhead and mount the speakers 6 inches higher :D on the wall or some solid, fixed structure.

Seriously, book shelf speakers on stands around enthusiastic 3 and 5 year olds would not have enough stability IMHO.

Good Luck ;)

Can you wall-mount them? Not as good as on a stand, I know, but they would be safer.

I think young children running through the house = a good chance speakers will get knocked over whether they are towers or bookshelves on a stand. More likely with the bookshelves though. Until he went to in-walls, a friend of mine always took his bookshelves off the stands when they were not in use. Kind of a pain, but I don't think they ever got knocked over.

Having two kids myself, that is the best advise or better yet, no kids allowed in the man cave :D

I used blu-tack to attach the speaker to the stand and then blu-tack to attach the stand to my hardwood floors (original 1925 oak planks). With blu-tack they are extremely sturdy. I used 6 quarter diameter sized pieces(about a 1/4 in thick) to attach the stand to the floor and 4 of the same sized pieces to attach the speaker to the stand. I pressed them down firmly and they will not tip over at all. I think my wood mdf stands would break before they tipped.

Another option you could look at is outriggers on your towers to give them even more stability.

One good bump & those bookshelves are toast. Althought it probably wouldn't hurt to tell your kids that running is for playgrounds, not for inside the house.

Picture Shooter, How the HELL did you know that I have the Quads in the man cave now? Do you know me???????? The kids aren't allowed down there, but they sneak from time to time.

The rest of you guys are cracking me up. Yes, I tell the kids no running in the house numerous times a day. They just don't listen and someone made it illegal to give them the ***-whoopins that we recieved growing up, so they pretty much do what they want.

I guess I didn't tell you that the living room system (or lack thereof).
HK 245 reciever
HK DVD 27
Quad L Centre
Axciom QS-8's
Cerwin Vega E-710's

Those Vegas have to go. I can't stand watching movies, listening to the radio or anything with them. It's driving me crazy, so either I bring my speakers back up and find replacements for the man cave, or buy some Quad's to match the Quad centre.

I've thought about electric fence around the speakers.........but then figured it was a bad idea. The blue tack seems like a good idea.

Thanks and keep the comments coming.
