Bluray player recommendations

I have HDMI cable running from BDP to AVR.
"Pass through" is the default as long as you are using a digital cable between your BDP and AVR, the Sony DAC will not be used (no reason to convert to analog, only to convert back to digital for output). The video signal will stay digital all of the way to the TV. The audio signal will stay digital while any room correction and cossovers and other processing are performed. For audio, the digital to audio conversion happens just before the signal is sent to the amplifier.

So really, all you have to do is not use analog outputs from the BDP!

I agree but I'm wondering why my AVR (Yamaha 1030A) display just says "Straight" and not Dolby or DTS-HD, etc... Is the decoding happening at the AVR?

I don't know about a Yamaha AVR, i chose bitstream in the audio settings of the BDP which sends the signal uninterrupted to the AVR for processing/decoding. I think sony players give you the option of either pcm or bitstream. At least my bx1100 did.

It does allow u to send in this formats. Which is the preferred format? I bel I've ready pcm is better than bitstream. ?

It should be determined by the disc in the player.
You don't have a "Direct", "Pure Direct", or "Source Direct" selected, do you?

Hey guys.. with some of the recent blu-rays that came out, like the Beatles +1 and Bob Marley, i really want to upgrade my old Oppo player!

Unfortunately.. I don't want to spend $500 Does anyone know of any good modern universal players (blu-ray, sacd, dvd-audio) that I can get (used is ok) for around $200 or less?

just bought a BDP-80 off ebay for $120, not bad huh?

Well for that price you can get the Sony's High end Blu ray if its available in the market. I just recently bought the Sony Blu ray player model "SONY BDP-S5500" and plays any format i throw in it. Thats including DTS-HD , DOLBY TRUE HD.

One thing I seem to be doing differently than most people: I absolutely did not care whatsoever about streaming capabilities in the player. I have an Apple TV which, I'm pretty sure, will be a much better Netflix streamer than any bd player, especially in terms of speed/user experience. So I went for the step down from the wire cutter.

I know, not exactly an audiophile recommendation but I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with Blu-ray Discs (definitely not buying them, mostly getting them from Netflix). I am pretty happy with this solution: I had some Best Buy gift cards and ended up spending under $20 on the player, it sits next to the Apple TV and under the Classe Sigma SSP and the pair of Triangle Magellan Duetto speakers.

In terms of user experience I would agree with you but not speed, at least not what I use it for, mainly Netflix and You Tube. Sometimes I feel my cheap Sony BX-59 (=S590) is faster. I hope the new Apple TV will in fact be much faster, but too pricey right now regardless.

Yes, re-reading my post, I don't know what I really meant by speed… It's definitely more about user experience and browse-ability, when controlled by an iPhone, it's so much easier to search than with a regular remote (keyboard search). I haven't tried the new Apple TV but I'd be curious to use the siri search with netflix and co.

Yep, you can search things much quicker for sure. With the Sony, I could download apps for use with Android devices such that you can also search by typing with the device soft or hard keyboards, still not as good as using the Apple devices for sure.
