blue ray player or PS3?

I don't know if the new PS3 40gb is out, but it seems to me that a PS3 is cheaper than a blue ray player. So if someone is a gamer is there any reason NOT to get a PS3? Is there any difference in performance for blue ray movies?

Thanks!

November 2nd is the expected release date for the 40G. The PS3 ranks right up there with the best players available. ESPECIALLY if you are a gamer, the PS3 makes sense. The 40G is supposed to be bundled with the Spiderman trilogy in addition to the 5 free discs by mail.

Blu-ray.

Went to Target at lunch today. The store I went to had 2 of the 60 gig
versions still in stock at 499.00. Saw them behind the glass display case
right next to the 80 gig units.

If you are looking at the 40gig version, check out stores like Target,
Walmart, etc. They may still have some available 60gig versions available. The 60 gig version, other than a smaller HD than the 80 gig version has all the features, including wireless internet, memory card reader, etc that the 80 gig version does. I didn't ask (nobody at the electronics counter) but I think this version is still available with the 5 free BD discs.

Yes, all models qualify for the 5 free discs. The 60G has backwards compatibility with PS2 games, something the 40G does not have.

Has that actually been confirmed that the new 40g model does not have backward's compatibility ? I certainly hope that isn't the case. Also, will
it have the wireless card ? I still havn't seen anything official come out.

I believe the PS3 HDTV blue ray function is being considered by reviewers as comparable to dedicated HDTV receivers, or at least certainly acceptable. The PS3 software is constantly being updated for the better, which is a really positive benefit of the PS3. I have hooked up my son’s PS3 to our home theater and watched two movies so far with very good results. Most of his games are 720p while our HDTV is 1080i. The games look very good also. I don’t see any reason why you would not want a PS3 if you plan to do any gaming at all. If you are primarly going to watch blue ray movies, you would probably find it worth your while to pick up the optional PS3 movie remote controller.

I do believe that Sony confirmed that backwards compatibility has been removed on the 40G model. The 80G still has it via software emulation though.

As for the remote control, keep your eyes open for deals when they go on sale because Amazon had a deal where the bundled additional movies and the bluetooth BD remote.

I had a PS2 and was not too crazy with the games available. I have a Wii and figured since I will get a blue ray player, I ought to consider the 40g model, as I don't need all the bells and whistles.

And since I'm going to get another Harmony remote I won't need the PS3 remote.;)

The PS3 is bluetooth, so universal remotes don't work at this point. There are ways to get one to work, but not with every feature.

I had a PS3 (I later sold it to my little brother).
I had 3 issues with it.

First, it does NOT have 7.1 analog outputs. This requires a new receiver with HDMI inputs so that you can take advantage of the new HD sound formats: PCM, TrueHD.

Second, sometimes I would not get any sound at all! Sometimes I get a very "congested" sound.

Third, that fan noise may not bother some people, but it bothers me enough.

These may be insignificant issues to a lot of people.

Well, maybe because we don't need another root kit from Sony?

So does the 80GB PS3 have 7.1 Audio or do they all just do 5.1???

That would spoil my plans!!

I'm going Blue Ray and PS3 when GT5 comes out. I plan on using the PS3 as my Blue Ray HD DVD Player. But Audio system is 7.1 CH. :(

All PS3's do 7.1. Although I recommend that if you already have an hdmi 1.3 receiver like the Onkyo 605 and you won't be playing any games to go with the new Panasonic BD-30 player as it does bitstream for all formats. It's also profile 1.1.
