Interesting Blu tidbit

Singulus received orders for 21 Blu-ray dual-layer machines in the first quarter and said on Monday the figure showed the new technology was being adopted faster than its predecessor, DVD, 11 years ago.

"This means that the orders for Blu-ray in the first year of the dual layer technology already by far exceeded the volume at the start of the DVD eleven years ago with 17 machines," Chief Financial Officer Stefan Baustert said

Cool.

My local Blockbuster already has a whole wall of Blu-rays for rent. They just put up a Blu-ray display with a PS 3. Hopefully, JQ Public will start jumping on the bandwagon. Every time I rent a Blu-ray at BB, they ask me if I have a Blu-ray player. The lady told me yesterday that she had 4 people return discs because they wouldn't play on their DVD player.

That's the problem. There's simply not enough or efficient public marketing on what it is, and what it does. My brother, my sister, and my neighbor, still don't get it. They think they can either hook up bd players to non-high def tvs or they think the blu-ray disc will play in their regular dvd players with the same blu-ray results.

Granted, I'm into this stuff, so it's hard for me to guage, but with the exception of you guys and a couple of other friends who are into a/v, no one seems to know what it's all about.

I've been renting from Hollywood for some time now, unfortunately, their selection is small and I've pretty much seen or own everything they have (I think I own more discs than they do). They always ask if I have a BD player too - which is a good thing - but it does indicate to me that they have had people rent them and not have a BD player.

I just rented The Eye yesterday. Great picture and pretty good sound. Too bad the movie was nowhere near as good as the original Chinese version. But at least Jessica Alba's easy on the eyes, (pun intended).

Ditto.

I was at a Sony store recently and the PS3's were $300 for the 40 gig and $400 for the 80 gig. I was just wondering if those are good prices. My G/F and I had just bought a Panny plasma so I didn't want to spend anything on anything just then. Well, they got me for $35 on some 50% off refurbed cordless headphones. :)

$300 for the 40GB is a damn good price IMO and I say jump on it. I also rent all my BDs from netflix and have yet to have problems getting the discs I want. Plus I just got the Roku box for online streaming and it's working great too.

You can use a Blu-ray player with SDTV, you just won't get the full benefit of what it can offer. That's not to say that Blu-ray is worth buying if you don't have an HD display, unless you are really only after it for the audio aspect.

I'm gonna wait. Still smarting from $2000 spent on the plasma, wall mount and hdmi cables. Besides, I really want the 80 gig (not that I really know the difference) and to complicate things I'm currently lusting after a Behringer DCX 2496 (not that I really know how to use one).

Balancing compulsion, budget and ignorance is quite a feat. :)

I'm hoping someone comes out with a high quality standalone player that is as fast as the PS3 and supports all the standards. I would be happier about getting a PS3 if they still had hardware support for PS2 games.

Until then, I'm happy with my DVD collection.

Isn't it just a little sick that this hasn't happened yet? I mean, seriously...

I believe the PS3 80G MGS4 Bundle that launches tonight at midnight is backwards compatable with ps2.

Not at all, Blu-ray launched a year ahead of where it should have thanks to MS and Toshiba and the PlayStation 3 has a processor inside it faster than pretty much any consumer PC out there where certain imaging tests are concerned that are processor intensive.

It's common sense.

I think you're letting a somewhat useless feature keep you from enjoying all that Blu-ray has to offer. The PS3 is a great player!! I thought the same thing when the PS 2 came out. I wanted backwards compatibility. But once I started playing PS 2 games, there was no way I was going back.

It's the same with the PS 3. The games are so superior to PS 2 games that I don't even bother.

Same here. There isn't even a comparison. I understand that you still enjoy your PS2 games, but that's what your PS2 is for... My PS2 has been sitting 100% idle for almost a year now. This definitely should not be a reason not to buy one.

I've seen very few titles for the PS3 that would justify buying it as a game machine. The Xbox 360 has a pretty big library now and I've forgiven MS for screwing the pooch on backwards compatibility.

As far as I know, nobody has really found a good use for BD 2.0 but I don't want to be left behind if anyone figures it out. And why do standalone players have problems with load time? The PS3 must have to start up some sort of OS before it plays a disc. What's the deal with the Pioneer and Panasonic machines?

You can get backwards compatability

I picked up the 80g PS3 TODAY! It was the MGS4 bundle, so got the 80g PS3, rumble controller, and MGS4 game, as well as a $100.00 Wallmart gift card. That deal was hard to turn down! :D

The PS3 has already gone through its boot sequence by the time you fire up a disc. However, the PS3's boot time is still a LOT faster than my A2, just to get to the point where it will even take a disc.

Honestly, I don't really know what you are talking about... My panny boots up plenty fast for me. I rarely have a disc picked out before its ready. Or by the time I can turn off all the lights. Well, its way faster than my Tosh HD-A35 in any case.

I still have no idea what I'll miss out with 2.0. I never watch commentary. I have a growing collection, and I never have watched commentary (or is that what 2.0 is even for??).

2.0 adds web based features. 1.1 added PiP video for things like commentary. Even though I have it and movies that utilize it, I have yet to use the 2.0 features either.
