Blu-Ray audio compatibility

So im upgrading my system slowly but surely, ive just recently ordered an HDTV which means the blu ray player is next on the list. however, i have seen that they use different audio formats then DVDs such as the the newer lossless formats of dolby digital and DTS, my receiver is not built to process this and can only process regular dolby digital and regular DTS audio. my question is, will my receiver be compatible with blu-rays?

First let me say that the hd codecs IMHO are not that much better than DD and DTS. As for the bluray capabilities, we need to know what AVR you are using.

i agree with that statment, DD is already a VERY good compression algorithm and DTS is like 1.5mbps anyways, which is very high, i personally find that DTS is much more transparent and dynamic. as far as the AVR im using its a marantz sr7400, it has the ability to process DD-EX, DTS-ES and 2 channel PCM.

Isn't it so that when you connect your blu-ray player via HDMI to an AVR, that the blu-ray player will check which audio formats the AVR can handle and pass the corresponding audio format to the AVR ? So if the AVR can't handle Dolby TrueHD, the blu-ray will pass DD etc ..

No HDMI so you need a player that will decode the new codecs internally and output via multichannel analog outputs.

A bluray with 7.1 ch analog outputs would be your only option for the HD codecs.

thanks, also since i have no intention of getting a new receiver because i will never be able to afford one right now that is as good as this one, is it possible to get an external processor that is around 150? (maybe i am a little out of my mind asking for one at the price)

the linked bluray will process the codecs and send them out over the multich analog outputs to your multi channel inputs. Bass management will need to be done on the oppo side.

There is no need or advantage to an external processor if it can be done in the player. It would be a waste of your money.

i have actually been contemplating getting a processor for awhile now since all of the new codecs came out, and if i can get a processor for under 200 it would not waste my money, it may save me money in the future because i can get a BR player for less then 100 bucks, the processor will save me money in the long run because if the devices using true hd etc become avalible in other devices, i wont have to worry about upgrading my receiver.

Just so you're aware, even if your receiver can't process the new codecs, blurays will still be watchable using DD or DTS depending on which is available on the disc of course.

You could still get a cheap BR player now and upgrade receiver later. I can't tell enough difference between the new codecs on enough of the media just yet to justify either a BR or receiver upgrade.

I don't think you're finding a processor for that kind of money. If you've got 200 to spend, sell your receiver and get one that does what you need.

well i looked at a few blu-rays tech specs on the back and some of them had DD 5.1 many of them had DD 2.0

How do you plan on connecting the bluray player to the processor?

Is there even a standalone external processor that does what you want in the first place? At what price? Links please.

What products besides blurays, do you think might come out with these newer codices?

if and when i purchase another receiver it will be a marantz, the one i have my eye on is like 1000 dollars. which is not feasible atm, i would have to save for a long time to get that (at least a year). i could get a cheap one from sony but last sony receiver i demoed was weak, it didnt have the high power output of the marantz i have that i like. if anyone knows of a receiver that can live up to its WPC specs closely with all channels driven that is not through the roof in price, feel free to recommend it.

I don't think you're finding a processor for that kind of money. If you've got 200 to spend, sell your receiver and get one that does what you need.
