BJ to be Blu-ray exclusive

Video Business news reported that an "insider" along with major Hollywood studios have reported that by the end of Q4 BJ's 170 stores are going Blu-ray exclusive, at this moment it's a "credible" rumor, but take it with a grain of salt. If it pans out this can be very problematic for HD DVD.

Why? Personally, I've never heard of BJ's and I think the great majority of Americans have never heard of HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Sounds like a big yawn to me.

Why? Because it's a retail venue closed off, so your slacking sales suffer even more, the point it's not wether the greater public knows the formats, the problem is that a struggling format can be handed a serious blow. Which is of interest to people that are following the HD DVD/Blu-ray controversy. Ever hear of Costco? They're the competition.

Its a members only wholesale club.

How people can work their with a straight face eludes me.

I think Wal~Mart (and Sam's Club) has a distinct advantage over these other wholesale marts. Why?, because I have never heard anyone ask "what's Wal~Mart?" with any amount of sincerity. Paris Hilton cannot save the format Wal~Mart chooses to not support by boycotting "The place that sells walls".;)

Hey Seth,

The point of the OP was to ascertain if the action by BJs (if true) would be a bad influence on HD DVD, not if people recognized the store, my point is that it would be another venue closed off to HD DVD and in markets where BJs is known it will make a difference, we have BJs down here, they have a total of 170 stores. And as for the majority of Americans having never heard of Blu-ray or HD DVD, anyone with a tv has, but there's a difference between having heard of something and having an interest in it.

I understand, every little push in either direction counts.:)

Blu-Ray Ultra Hi-Rez

Hello All!
Maybe one of you can help me.
I have never heard of BJ's either but I have heard of the new hi-rez audio format for Blu-Ray. Unfortunately I cannot seem to find anyone else who knows what the hell I am talking about.

It supports 9.2 channels in surround and an insane 512 kHz 64-bit in stereo.

Has anyone heard of this yet? Do you know if I will be able to buy the discs and the player at BJ's???

PLEASE HELP!!! I REALLY WANT TO LISTEN TO THIS.

There is information here about it...

Likewise, I have not heard of it.

I do know Tomlinson Holman has done work on a 10.2 system, But I highly doubt any such format being released on current HD disc formats.

Reason being, the existing hardware and software was not created with such a format in mind, and implementing such a format would require (among other things) new mixing studios, and receivers capable of using discreet signals for more than eight channels.

My advise is, if you want high-rez sound now, buy some DVD-A or SACD's.... or go to a live concert. :D

I didn't follow the link.... I was in fear for my computer.
Following the link doesn't include much risk, possibility of spam (debt consalidation or something) and a very low chance that a hacker would get into your system. Of course, if someone wants into your computer and knows what they are doing they don't need your permission to do so.

Downloading unknown files is like going into a factory in Mexico and picking up a piece of unknown debris and swallowing in hopes that it is a piece of candy. Well, I could care less if it is candy, could be poison, could be a date rape pill, regardless I will leave it there.:D

Great analogy! However, I can't help thinking...it could be candy. Mmmm, sweet candy.

On a related note (sorry), this reminded me of when a friend of mine in high school dropped what I thought was an M&M on the floor in one of our classes. I quickly swooped down, grabbed it, shoved it in my mouth, and chomped down. Let me just say, Advil is not something that you want to chew.

BJ's Wholesale for my local, DC Metro, is mainly a Virginia based chain as Costco predominately has the Maryland area. Is it a big deal to me? No, but I would think that every chain level hit on a specific format has an impact on the big picture.

The heavy hitter will be WalMart and I bet they support both formats to the bitter end.

BJ's is very well known where the store exists. Many places simply do not have a BJ's in the area, so no one has ever heard of it.

In any case, the name of the place is BJ's. It's not "BJ." *No one* knows what "BJ" is ;)
