My new home is currently under construction, well at least once they start digging the hole for it. None the less, I want to figure out my Home Theater Speaker system for the great room/family room prior to framing being completed, so I can run the wires in wall. This will be a secondary home theater area, as the final and primary theater will go in the basement in a year or two.

I am looking to get an in-wall speaker system for the great room which measures 14 (W) x 19 (L) and is two stories in height (Somewhere between 4,700 and 5,300 cu ft).

I am leaning towards purchasing the BIC Acoustech HT8's. Are there other suggestions out there, that would significantly improve the quality for the price increase? I am willing to go up to $200 perspeaker if there is a solid improvement in quality.

The other question I have is the subwoofer....will the Acoustech H100 be enough for this size room or should I upgrade to an SVS PB10 (for instance)? Any thoughts on the sub would be great as I am not sure which way to go right now.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I'd have to say those subwoofers are undersized for that room. I think you should be looking at the 12" SVS subs or the 12" Hsu subs.

How much do you want to spend on a sub? My advice is to get the Cadence X-sub.

Muzzle, that is one heck of a lot of room in that er... room. You need way more sub than you are looking at for sufficient bass in IMO. Maybe one 12" will do it for you, but I doubt it. I like Macman's suggestion but I'd go him one further and suggest 2 Cadence Xsubs. A member here, Craigsub did a fantastic writeup on this sub, maybe someone will be kind enough to link you to it. 2 of the X-subs would be $440 shipped.

I would prefer to be around $500, but to make sure it is adequate I woudl be willing to go up to $750.

For my 5000+ sq. foot room, with openings to the rest of the house, I purchased two SVS 16-46PC+ subwoofers. Much more than the $500 you're looking for, but I felt that was what I needed for this room. That, and the 12Hz extension.

In-Wall speakers

Axiom Audio will be releasing an inwall version of their speakers soon which should be in your price range. I would reccomend a 7.1 setup for such a large room and efficient in-wall speakers. You might also consider a set of floorstander fronts and in-wall surrounds to allow your HT to achieve higher SPLs in such a large room.

You'll get more value for your buck going with HSU (IMHO), which may I mention, will soon be coming out with High Output/Turbocharged options for its 12" subs. One STF-3 or VTF-3 would do you. Less is questionable as others have said. If you're looking for quality depth in your bass, under 30hz, for example, ixnay on the Xsub. Stick with HSU or SVS.

My room is about the same size. I use 6 KLH subs (bought @ Costco for around $500 for all 6 of them) connecting to my Yamaha 2500 receiver. I place these subs around the room, double-duty them as chairs.

Try it. The effect is unreal.
