Okay, so I'm not going to write a small novel this time. I just want to drop a line and say that these speakers, the BIC bookshelves, are NOT hype. They're quite awesome. Somewhat bright (I plan on getting the crossover mod done), but by no means murderous highs. The midrange is very clear. I think it's better than the B&W 705s personally. The bass on these is really special though. I'm really impressed without the output and tightness of the bass on these speakers. Right now I'm blasting Pink Floyd at ear-damaging levels (I actually have hearing protection on, as I can't be any closer than 20 ft to the speakers without it being too loud). They show no signs of distortion or distress. The VU meters on my old Yammie receiver indicate they're seeing 40 watt peaks.

When I first bought these, I was worried that they could handle high SPLs without distortion. NO worries there. At all.

After listening to these, I'm convinced that you can't find a better value for anywhere near the price.

Not even a reply? I'm surprised. For as often as these speakers get plugged, no one seems to talk much about the sound or their experiences.

Completely agree!!

Jaxvon,

I just got these babies hooked up to my new Pioneer VSX-815 and was pretty blown away for the price. I am having a hard time deciding between the 62SI and 52SI for the surronds, my living room is so small I think the 52SI might be a better option. What do you think???

Go with the 62s. The 52s have a half inch tweeter and don't have the "magic" the 62s have. Besides, these things are dirt-cheap anyway. Since you already like the 62s, just grab another pair.

Have you cranked yours yet?

Does anybody know if the BICs are available in Canada?

Thanks,

Yes they are. You can get the BIC bookshelves for 134.49 shipped to anywhere in Canada from X-10. That's in USD of course. I'm not sure what brokerage would on them, but I'm pretty sure X-10 uses FedEx, NOT UPS.

Very Nice

Yeah had them up pretty loud!!! Unreal for the price. Hey Jaxvon I was playing a movie tonite( i only have the two hooked up) and it seemed like I had to turn the volume up quite a bit to get it pretty loud compared to playing a music DVD. Is this normal???

Thanks

Eric

I dunno. It could be the mastering level on the disc, but I suspect that because most of the sound info on a movie is sent to the center channel, your L&R speakers were missing out. I bet once you add the center things should be better.

I'm listening to some jazz right now (Kind of Blue) and it sounds GREAT. I'm still amazed at how loud these things can go, and how good they sound at all levels. The imaging is pretty darn good too. Now all I have to do is make my stands so they're positioned correctly.

Any recommendations on reasonably priced stands??

Any ideas on reasonably priced stands for the 62SI's?

Jaxvon,
How long have you owned them? If you get really bored one evening, take out the woofer - carefully. You'd be amazed how well these little gems are put together. They're built as good or better than my Polk RTi4's. They are much heavier, too.

I bought a pair of DV62 bookshelves in college. I purchased them at a high end audio store in Cleveland, Ohio in 1989. I think I paid $150 for the pair on clearance. They haven't changed much from what I can tell. I did blow out one tweeter during an insane party. I sent the tweeter to BIC, and they shipped out a new one - no questions asked. $5 S/H - how can you go wrong. I think the most amazing part is their warranty. Who has a 7 year warranty in the industry?

The DV62's are still in the family. My younger brother has them in Toledo, and loves them. They sit on 32" self made stands, and look great in his apartment. I even think he uses them when he dj's house parties. He's got a professional mixer, two Gemini tables, and a huge digital Yamaha keyboard. All his sound goes through them, along with a 10" pro sub. Those little guys can take a beating.

If you don't care too much about a fancy appearance, you can make your own stands. Mine are going into a dorm room, so they need to be tough more than anything else. I plan on using some PVC top and bottom plates with a 6" PVC pipe filled with sand for the main "trunk". I think I may epoxy a small 1/2" pipe on the back for wire management. The finishing touches will be some spikes or heavy duty feet, and a nice coat of spray paint.

Buck:

I've owned these for a few months (got them off Ubid when they were $96 plus shipping), but I just hooked them up a couple days ago. They've been on basically all day. I might have to pop open the woofer for kicks. Besides, if I get decide to get the crossover mod done (which is almost certain), then I'll get to check out Mr. Woofer anyway.

Parts Express has some decent options for around 50 bucks.

Just search for "speaker stands" at parts express. It will take you right to the stands section page.

How tall on the stands??

Jax,

How tall do you think on the stands with the bic's?? i see everything from 18" to 31". Curious if front's hould be different than backs??? Sitting on standard sofa and chairs. To me it seems like the 24" would be perfect maybe 30"

Well, you can do what I did. If you have a 3ft level, a steady hand, and a measuring tape, you're set. Sit on your couch. Hold the level to your ear and make sure it's...uhm..level. Then measure the distance from the floor to the center of the level. That should be the height of the tweeters, or therabouts. That way you can have good, clear, on-axis sound.

I will concur on the BIC DV-62si. I have the Ed Frias crossover mod and you cant' beat the value that these speakers offer! I have about $145 in these speakers with the mod. Outstanding!! Grab a pair if you can they are certainly worth it!! :)
