Why raise the budget if I can get nice speakers for 1000 bucks? Honestly, what are a set of 3k speakers going to do that 1k won't? (for non-critical ears, really)
That's the question that keeps these fourms going, and it's one only you can answer. I have a friend that plays mp3's on $75 2.1 speakers pluged in to his out-dated computer, & finds it just fine. There are diminishing returns on your "bang for the buck" as you spend more, but I feel that there's still value to be had in pushing up above $1000 for a 5.1 speaker system. A $1500-$1800 budget opens up a lot more possibilities.

PS: I didn't mean to imply that because you're buying a house that you're very rich and/or a spend-thrift. I take it to mean that you look for long term value, and are willing to spend money on something that will last for a while.

thanks for the reply, corey. No worries, I was just giving you some grief. ;)

Can you point me in a direction as to speaker packages/brands to look for in the range you describe (keeping in mind looks are not important) What I was really driving at was, it seems that with some of the higher cost speakers you end up paying for name and the finish on the speaker itself, rather than anything noticeable difference in performance/sound/etc. Maybe I'm assuming too much, maybe the higher priced speaker actually DO sound ''better'' or perform better than say this BIC Acoustech package? Perhaps the Ascend package will really make that much of a difference and warrant the extra few hundred? I dunno, I guess I'll have to find someone that can compare the two from personal experience.

We are a long way off from even putting equipment in the room, I've got plenty of time to flip flop around on gear. The 'budget' has not been determined, really - but I imagine we can make it rather flexible if need be. :p

It looks like Bic may have another line of Acoustech speakers. They are not on the Bic website but have found them in an ebay store here

Interesting. The Premier speakers from Acoustech. They don't appear to have horn-based tweeters. Thanks for sharing the link.

Careful with that link... those are not BICs, but a typo.. they are actually Premier Acoustic speakers.

I am the proud owner of the Bic Acoustech setup, I also own two x-ls speakers and my father owns the Ascends so I think I can have some helpful input on this. First off I think the sound of the Ascends is a little better than the Acoustechs but its difficult to compare the two since the Ascends are in a different price range. Even if one bought 4 170's for fronts and surrounds and one 340 for the center the price is still higher than the Acoustechs setup which comes with a pretty decent sub. For the price it's really difficult to beat the Acoustechs, I really prefer my x-ls's for music but when it comes to movies the Acoustechs can bring it. As far as weight I think people overestimate how large the towers are, sure they are tall but not very deep or wide at all. The weight is decent, could be better, but not as bad as sheep was describing them to be. They definitly don't vibrate. This possibly could be due to their main weakness which is the drivers, they are alright but no where close to the sound of the tweeter. Personally if you are building a system that is 90% movies and 10 percent music the acoustechs are the way to go. If you listen to as much music as movies or more music than movies then the Acoustechs will probobly leave you wanting a little more and upgradeitis is bound to set in.

How owuld you compare the X=LS TO the asacends? I liste to 50% music 50% movies... I justr order the x-ls today - wondering if I made a mistake..

I heard these BICs - I agree that they have better sound for movies...
