Is it possible to Bi-Amp using a receiver and an amp? (i.e. not two separate amps, but having to reciever act as one amp and the external acting as the second?)

Hi there,

Yes, it's technically possible if you have preamp outputs on your receiver. Ideally, you would want to use four identical amplifier channels to bi-amp one pair of speakers. Since your amps would be different (two channels in the receiver, two in the external amp), you might have some integration issues. That said, if you hook everything up properly, yes, it will work. Experiment around with it and see if you like it.

Good luck.

I agree with Otto. In addition some newer reciever, like the Onkyo 605, let you assign two channels (the back surround on a 7.1 system) to the front for bi-amping purposes. This works well if you are bi-amping the front of a 5.1 setup. You should be able to pick up the 605 for around $399 +/-.
