Better AM Reception

Is there such a thing as a powered antenna for AM or somehow I can improve reception?
I have one of those little circle type that came with my Onkyo receiver but it doesn't work very well.
The problem is definitely my location because I have the same trouble in the car untill I get about a mile away from home, then it's crystal clear.
Any suggestions?

the primary issue with AM radio reception is the antenna required. AM frequencies are very low and the length of tuned antennas to receive them is very long, in the hundreds of feet. So, short of running a 200 or 300 foot long wire antenna out of your window, you may want to explore the world of "AM loop antennas". Some wood framing and a bunch of wire can produce an nice "compromise" antenna for AM frequencies....it's a neat experiment anyway.

there are some wideband amplified antennas that will tune the AM band, but they also pickup a considerable amount of atmospheric and human induced static and noise, so try making a simple loop first, without spending much money.
