best way to set eq?

im trying to set up my geq on my yamaha rx-v465 and need some help. the problem im having is that i cant change a geq setting for all of the speakers at the same time, i have to choose FL,FR,C,etc.. then change the setting. how i set it was i put in a cd, set the receiver to 2ch stereo, unplug the right speaker, tune the left one, then copy the setting for the rest. is there a better way of doing this because i cant set a eq for 1 speaker when all the other ones are playing, and my method isnt very efficient when i just want to make a quick change

The reason it wants to set each channel separately is that each channel needs different settings. If the left front speaker is near a corner and the right front is next to a doorway, they can't sound the same with the same setting. Equalizers are supposed to be set after analyzing the performance of each channel.

Doesn't that receiver shut the other channels off after selecting one?

Are you using a reference tone or pink noise source or the setup menu? Does that model have YPAO and a microphone?

according to yamaha's web site - it does.

im just using music im familiar with, no test tones(i dont know what to do with them). i ran the ypao about 5 times and the results just suck.
