Best way to compare components?

Hey guys, I was wondering what is the best way to compare different audio components? (Such as seeing what speakers sound better) I've got a bunch of speakers and I was wondering how to figure out how to test them for their quality, like what should I do? Have them set in a room and test them with the same amp (analogue or digital input?) what should that source be? (CD, Computer) and what is best used to test it? CD? FLACs?

Also, what tests would I do to test some surround (or normal) receivers?

Choose the material you know well and like.
Decent CD transport should be enough in most cases. DVD-Audio would be a bit better, but a bit harder to get and setup.
