Best subwoofer location

It may have been PENG, or another... but it seems I've seen mention that if the AVR's Room Correction detects 40Hz from a speaker, it automatically sets them to Large. I have a pair of speakers that are true 2-way standmounts (6" woofer, .5cu.ft. cabinet), but due to the Bass Shelf alignment of the Cabinet and the Driver, it has usable Bass output down around 34Hz. Audyssey sets them to large every time. FTW

So that’s what happened to me, Audessey keeps setting my Dyn’s to large. All fun and games until I run into port chuffing.

So if I am understanding right the problem is that both subs I tested cant go low enough. Not that the room is "sucking the bass" from it. If so, I will return the B12 and save some money for XTZ or something else. In the meantime, I will finish the room treatment and maybe complete the 5.0 setup. I am not so much a "bass freak". I had floorstanding speakers before and when I switched to bookshelves I just wanted to help them sound full. From my past experience, good floorstanding speakers are sufficient for music but for movies, the sub is a must-have.

Kudos @davidsvehla for being on the active side of this hobby! We see so many people that want answers but don't understand the basics. That you started off with Measurements is fantastic!

Thank you very much. I love to learn new things and music and movies are my passion. When I upgraded my old AVR and started watching youtube reviews I saw everywhere REW. And I immediately knew that I need the calibration mic because in everything I do I want to know and see what is happening, not guess. And today I got proof that 100€ for the UMIK1 was well invested money that leads me to better sub and better sound

Also thanks for clarify the YPAO / Audyseey process. I know a lot of people who will only do the automatic calibration and never figure out that their subfoower doesn't work :/

You're not wrong. Your room will almost definitely have its issues too, yes. A better sub won't automatically fix everything. It's probably still going to take a little bit of experimenting to find a good location and get everything dialed in, but trying to do it with an insufficient subwoofer makes it just that much harder.

You've demonstrated that you're very capable of figuring it out tho! It's nice to see that every once in a while. Yes tho, I do think you could use a better sub.

Yes, most of the avrs set speakers to large when they detect an f3 of 40hz. Why would you set the gain differently for different measurements? How are you setting gain on the sub to begin with?

I begin measurements with sub set on 50% in both locations. After that, I saw in the graph from REW that the position in the middle of the room has a more even response but the bass is "weak in volume". So I crank the volume up a little for about 65-70% and that's the result you can see in the graph. I was playing with positioning and volume and figure out that moving the sub or seat is changing the shape of the response curve and changing volume on the sub is only changing "the mass" of that frequencies. But I am not sure if I am saying and doing it right

Guys, thank you all for your help. Today I set on my couch and did some more testing but this time only with my ears. I tried music of all genres and few movies I know well and while I was listening I was turning on and off the sub (the Yamaha receiver allows that via the web interface) and I had a hard time recognizing when the sub was turned on. I will not pay 500$ for something that I cant even hear. The bookshelf speakers are quite close to the front wall and with the rear bass reflex the bass is little bit pronounce. So the B12 is going back to the shop and I am looking forward for some XTZ or SVS sub. Thank you all once more and have a great day.
