Best Sub for my setup and room

Hi:

I just recently upgraded my setup from JBL/Polk (Best Buy/Circuit City) gear to PSB T45s/C40/B15. I'm in love BTW :)

I have no sub currently and I'm actually ok with that for a while. I had an older Polk PSW350 before and I always hated it. I could never make it sound right even with an Avia disc and a meter. Even though my system was designed for home theater, I find myself using it as much if not more for music (mostly rock, some metal and electronic-ish type things). Also, when I watch movies, they are typically not action movies, and they are often at night after the kids are sleeping. My room is fairly large (it's a 13x25x9 great room) with a large opening (no door) into the kitchen and rest of the house as well as a stairwell to a lofted bedroom, so I'm guessing for subwoofer SPL purposes, this will classify as large.

I'm not interested in volume as much (as I have kids), but I do listen to some classical music with organs and do watch the occasional action movie, so I'd like a sub to fill in those occasional gaps. Before we bought this house, I was looking into the SVS PB10-isd (nsd these days I guess). Will this be woefully inadequate for my room do you think? What else should I be looking at for ~400-600? What about HSU? What about the Dayton (possibly DIY) stuff? What else am I not considering? I'm comfortable with DIY (at least to some degree: I'm building a headphone amp currently).

Sorry for the long post. I look forward to your replies.

SVS or HSU would be first off the top of my head in that price range, though you might also look at the AV123 MFW-15 threads here also, since it is also right there. You won't go wrong with any of them. I'd be leaning toward the $600 end of your range for a room that size as well. My room is 23x14 with a high angled ceiling, and I can tell you that a smaller sub will struggle to fill a room like that, especially being open to other areas.
