Best speakers for me <$400

Keep listening. This is the time to have plenty of fun demoing.
This is the problem. I've checked dealers, and this is the only place to listen around besides Best Buy. And all they carry is Paradigm.

Aperion will pay shipping both ways so you have nothing to lose by giving them a shot.

The Monitor 7's I am in love with, but they are double my price range. They were kind of high though, I think. They wanted $478 for a pair of Mini Monitors and $798 for a pair of Monitor 7s.
I have listened to the Monitors and they are ok, but you can probably get a cleaner sound out of most of the speakers recommended here. I would take the Axiom M3 and a sub over the Monitor 7 any day. The midrange is much better and although you won't get quite as much bass with the M3, it is much cleaner. I have not listened to most of the other speakers mentioned, but I suspect others can comment.

6 ohms is not hard to power. Lots of speakers rated higher will dip down to 6 and 4 ohms.

also a great choice. Problem is you got no budget for a sub and you really want one for bookshelves usually.
Well, a decent sub isn't really an option in his budget. Any sub less than that is going to end up as a doorstop in a year as he craves an upgrade (it's happened to all of us at least once...mine was a Klipsch KSW10...ick). The lowest "acceptable" sub in my book is an SVS PB10 or Hsu STF2.

I'd rather have quality bookshelves to build upon and add a quality sub later, than have to compromise on both and replace both. I know people here love the Behringers, but i just couldn't get over the looks of them...

Good advice. Buy quality the first time around and you will save in the long run.

The Behringers certainly are not the most elegant looking, but personally I like the more "industrial" look of them.

I [should] create a new thread detailing my experience with all these speakers. But I find it rather difficult to explain what I hear. Though I can still do my best.

I finally got my Radioshack SPL meter and using the pink noise of my reciever I found the M3's only needed a 1 db increase to match the 2030's at my position. Which is actually what I matched to using my ears and no pink noise (before I got the meter to verify).

Anyway I'm still not doing A/B tests. I just choose some material and listen. Then switch speakers and listen all over again. I'm not listening for specifics, I'm just listening; and if I happen to notice something specific I make a mental note. Works pretty well. (course it would have helped a ton to have an SPL meter all along :()

I've only spent about 2 days of serious listening between the two pairs and my thoughts thus far are this: I like the M3, a lot. It's great. But I feel the same about the 2030. The most notable thing is I felt that voices sounded just a little fuller/more realistic on the 2030. Maybe it's cause the 2030 has slightly more resolution, or maybe just because it's more neutral; I'm not sure.

Looking at Axiom's own graph, one can see the M3 is not exactly linear. That was apparent during my tests. Sometimes I liked that, other times not so much. Some high range vocals seemed slightly shrill at times. Though for movies/games (mainly sound effects) it was often a welcome addition. The M3's bass extension seemed a little better, though it's not a deal breaker IMO.

There may be other differences, but they're too subtle for me to describe so I won't even try.

Overall, I still like the 2030 the most. I find it's combination of clarity, smoothness, and neutrality just too hard to give up. I put a lot of faith into WmAx's praise for them. I had huge doubts about them for being so damn cheap ($120/pair). I'm still shocked I liked them the most.

Cool, thanks. This is the first time I have heard the 2030s compared to something I have listened to. The greater bass on the M3 is probably because of the broad hump around 100Hz. The 2030 is just an amazingly flat/neutral speaker. I think I need to try these out in my bedroom.

For the OP: You said you had a Best Buy near by. See if they have the Klipsch Reference series, and if so, listen to some RB-61's. They're SRP is a bit over your budget, but it's close.

Are these hard to power? I thought I read somewhere that they were 6 ohm?
Despite being 6 ohm nominal and despite warnings with my older Technics DX-940 A/Vrecevier saying not to use 6 ohm speakers, I did so anyway. That is drive an entire suite of Image series speakers from PSB...I have T45s as my mains, the older Image 8C (C40) and 1B (now B15) and drove them regularily to ear bleeding levels without any shutdown or overhearing issues. The sensitivity of teh Inmage series is fairly high and they are a very linear which gives the whole series good dynamics. Don't worry about their 6 ohm nominal rating.

A friend of mine no longer wanted his Polk TSi300's, so he gave them to me for $80. I couldn't resist and bought em, and they suite me fine. I know it's not "high end", but I have no complaints after some music and movies but they are no Mini Monitor's.

If you are happy, thats what counts. Spend a bit of the coin you saved on some of your favourite beverage, sit back, relax and enjoy the music!

Haha, yea I think I'ma spend it on a decent sub. Again, rock is mainly what I listen to. Like Marilyn Manson, Tool, and stuff like that. Some rap for parties, but mostly a sub that'll do well with music.
