I would have to say my marantz imperial 8's so far, working on getting some 9's. Those should be better.

I will add that one of the best speakers I have ever owned is the Infinity P362!

No matter how many other speakers I audition, I still think these P362s are absolutely wonderful speakers.

I bought em with the 100-S3 drivers. $500.00 cheaper than new speakers.

ScanSpeak

My ScanSpeak speakers are the best I've heard all around although I prefer the Eton ceramic/mag tweeters I have in my R/Ls. I actively crossover all front drivers and that adds tremendously to SQ.
I had a friend in the early '90s with Magnepans, I remember his system to be very good, perhaps the best I've heard in someone's home.

MB Quart QLS 1030

I have the big brothers to ZUMBO's 830's. I have had my MB's since 2000 and I absolutely love them. I am not even interested in anything else. I will keep them till they die or I die.....who knows what will happen first.:D

You would not believe how many times I have tried to get someone looking for speakers to buy MB Quart QLS.

Not once did someone here listen. I understand the whole buying before you hear thing, but you just can't beat them even at their retail price.

Gonna be a sad day when they are all sold. I got my first set in '03. Stunned that they are still available.

The German Maestro versions are expensive.

Guess it's a toss up between a pair of Carver Amazing Platinums and the current Acoustic Reasearch (Teledyne) AR9's I'm using.

Having a crossover upgrade done on a pair of Polk LSi9's with high hopes, as while I like the AR9's they take up a lot of real estate.

well, the LSi9 crossover upgrades are done. sweet Jesus, I think these just took the title. I'm flat out shocked at what these bookshelves are doing right now.

Clearly you were not using them with the right synergy.

(A jab at your favorite forum  )

humble thanks for clarifying that, I apparently would have never figured that out without your explicit disclosure? seriously? LOL

so is me being a member therebothering you or was it daring to bring up the issue of crossover mods? Healthy combo of both? just curious. I have to assume I tweaked a nerve (genuinly unintentional)

I'm sensing red chicklets in my future.

:( I was just making a joke about how they would sooner spend 4k on analog preamps for their polks than a cheap crossover mos.

I hear ya, there are many factions and different approaches at Club Polk. heck you can say that about here too.

I wish I could tell ya the crossover mods were cheap, I had to go the external route because the new components were huge. added to the cost, still worth it though. The crossover parts themselves were a bit pricey (which initially worried me) but I trusted the guy doing them for me that they would be worth it. he was right.

It's all relative though, compared to a 4k preamp I got off pretty cheap. :)

Well I've had my ESS AMT Monitors since Jan '82, so that should tell you something.

Yeah, you're old.:p
I'm an old lady and remember those drivers and see that they are still available (at least the tweeter). I've noticed a great improvement in speaker drivers since then, having been a "speaker builder," just no woodworking, since before 1980. These days its hard to compete with the low distortion of domes. If I had a speaker from the '80s I would replace pretty much everything, except in your case keeping the tweeter. But the lower frequency drivers have probably deteriorated in many areas along with the ancient electrolytics probably used in the crossover. I'm not a fanatic about caps but I think this would be important to me.

JBL 166 Horizon - the studio monitirs used in most studios for 20 years

The JBL speakers - century 100 - they had the orange covers (and black, too). I saw them at The Zoom Club in Frankfort Germany. in the 70's. 10 speakers divided in 2 stacks played loud and crystal clear! They were amazing!

So I took my amp to test them at the store (Army Audio Club store) and they sounded great! But then I saw the Studio monitors which totally blew away the others! The 166 horizon model is the same as the studio monitor - except the base is on the top for the monitors.

They are rated at 85 watts / 8 OHMS, but can handle 200 watts peak when needed. I played them at parties I had with live bands - in other part of the house - but blasting loud drowned out the band. My amp provides 110 watts RMS - bet 1/10th of a watt output is really loud enough for social events.

I returned to the states and bought Monster cable, and this is the thick stuff no longer made - but it made another great leap in sound quality!

They are high efficiency rated at (I think) 93DB at one watt at one meter. Most others were about 87 or 88DB.

They can still 'reach out and grab your belly' when you jam them with the bass. They somehow didn't keep up with technology, and now are no longer the preferred studio monitor for almost all recording studios, as they were for at least 20 years.

I still love my old B&W THX FCM8 lcr, SCM8 dipoles, and PCS8 subs. Love them so much I still use my 2 sets today. Did some sub upgrades through the years though, Velo DD-18, Axiom EP500, and dual ED A7-450.

Vandersteen 2Ce floor standing speakers. I have no idea why I sold them (well, probably had something to do with money).

The Vandersteen 2Ce was the most astounding full range speaker I've ever owned. It's a 4 way design and goes down to 25Hz all on its lonesome. Incredibly flat response and pinpoint imaging. If I get a chance to have another pair, I'll jump on it.

Perhaps someone can start a thread titled "Best Speakers You Used To Own".:D

We might also want a thread titled "Speakers You Want to Own for < $30,000/pr, but Just Can't Afford it Yet". :D
