Probably a stupid question, but:

Bookshelf speakers for the front?

yep, a sound quality improvement over what your use to. And thats only a suggestion. The B&W bookshelves in my bedroom system are more than enough without a sub.(only watch tv and listen to music) Monitor speakers make excellent LCRs.

I think a pair of Definitive Mythos Gems for around $500 and later move them to the rear as your budget increases. They sound and look really good.

Are you talking about the XL or the smaller Gems?

hmm..
Have you considered the Pioneer VSX-1018?

I have seen prices in the mid $400s. Loads of power, features, and will let you make the switch to new features (Blue-Ray, etc) when you want. The reviews have been positive so far. I have the older VSX-1016 model and I have been very pleased with it.

Thanks!

Hi, here's what I ended up deciding on.

I purchased the Definitive Gem's and used them to replace my Event 20/20s as my front L/R.

I mounted them on the wall next to the TV, and the look and sound excellent. Not only do I have some of that WOW factor I was looking for, but it makes my front room look a lot nicer.

Thanks a lot for the help, this upgrade was great.

Now... anybody want to buy some Event 20/20s? I'll have them on Ebay soon :)

THANKS YOU!

About a year ago, I received some free Polk Audio S-10 Floorstanding speakers, that are just AWESOME, and the best loudspeakers I've had (my previous loudspeakers were Technics SB-CR33). The Polks have a 1-inch dome tweeter, 7" midrange, and 10" reinforced woofer, and have a capability of 200 watts per channel max power. I currently use a Sony STRDE885 receiver. I've had it for about five years now with no problems. However, the THD rate is a little high (1% THD in Stereo mode).

I have an older Sherwood receiver dated from the late 70's-early 80's, and puts out 140W a channel at 0.06% THD in Stereo mode, and when the speakers are hooked up to that amplifier, they sound SO MUCH BETTER. I used that old amp and the Polks at a wedding reception in the last two weeks in a recreation hall, and they sounded awesome. Obviously I need to upgrade my amplifier. Sony used to make better amplifiers years back. I plan on switching to a Yamaha receiver. They have the lowest THD in the low price range (0.06% THD). Denon has 0.08% THD, which isn't bad either.

However, I do not like Denon's setup menus in the receiver, a bit confusing. Onkyo is good too, but distortion rate is not as low as Yamaha or Denon.

Just wanted to put in my $0.02. :)

But yeah, if any of you run across some Polk S-10 loudspeakers, get them. I got them free, but I would've paid $200 for them easily if I came across them somewhere.

I sorta want to try some S-10's. The ones made by PSB. However, I don't really feel the need try the S-10 Mirage subwoofer. In fact, I don't feel the need to try the Aperion S-10 sub either. I also refuse to check out the Chevy S-10 truck, cuz my Ford is holding up ok.

Sounds like I have what you need a Yamaha 2500. just upgraded to Pioneer 94TXH for it's HDMI connections. The yamaha is 140 watts per channel and accustomed to driving Polk LSI15.
Wonderful receiver 7.1 autocalibrate. Cost me $1299 3 years ago.
