Thirding the comments about the Yamaha RX-V663, it's simply better in every way but the scaler (which is not a great one on the Onkyo anyway, and I wouldn't see fit to use it).

I also vote for the 663. J&R is still offering a phone in deal for 400 so makes it even better.

I'm currently using a portable DVD player in my setup (no hdmi, rca video,ect) and the 663 does a great job upcoverting for my 42" plasma. I can't offer a side by side comparison between the two, but it is definitely better than not converting at all.

Unfortunately I don't know how much longer it's going on. When I got mine about a month ago they gave me free shipping.
I would recommend calling and see if they don't offer you they same deal. Otherwise you might be able to twist their nose a little and get ‘em to throw it in

yeah i called a couple of the guys and they also recommended the 663, but they may have just been trying to push their most popular unit...or thats how it sounded, neither guy gave me great reasons why the 663 is better than the 605 or other units

Yes, he was a pleasure to do business with, and I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from JR again in the future. Got my receiver in yesterday, and it's pretty nice. Still haven't hooked everything up, and setup the receiver, but so far I like it, it's nice, but nowhere as nice as my RX-V1800, but for less than half the price, I can't complain.

663 will run cooler.
All audio codecs.
