I was on the edge of getting a 46" Samsung 650 but we have real issues with lights and windows and glare. After seeing a Mitsubishi I realized we really, really don't want a glossy screen. I'd like recommendations for the best matte finish lcd TV.
My wife just saw some SD on a 52". She was very put off. I understood it and am not concerned but we still have important local channels in SD and will for some time to come. Can we program a HDTV to use a standard SD set of pixels on a given channel? I assume (but don't know) that a digital SD signal that we will get soon from our local channels, will be just as poor on a 46" HD screen as a good quality analog SD signal. Ultimately the question is, will all SD signals continue to look like crap on a 46" HDTV ? Are some HDTV's better at handling the problem? I've spent hours and hours comparing Samsung to Sony and now I realize I don't really want either and maybe if SD on HD looks poor no matter what, my wife will nix the entire thing.

I have a Toshiba 52XF550 and I think SD is acceptable on it. The screen is not glossy but the bezel surrounding the screen is high gloss. Because the bezel is very thin (3/4") it really doesn't cause any annoying reflections.

SD quality varies due to many factors: the compression level used by your cable company (which sometimes varies from channel to channel), the cable box, and the scaling capabilities of the TV. Some TVs do a better job than others but I think the Toshiba does a pretty good job. SD on the premium channels often looks way better than SD on the regular channels, presumably due to lower compression.

If your seating distance is 2-3x the diagonal measurement of the TV, you won't see any better details from a 1080p TV so you could consider getting a TV with a slightly lower native resolution, like 720p, because a SD (480i) image will look a bit better than blowing it up to 1080p.
